Son Gohan (孫 悟飯) is the first born eldest son of the series' main character Son Goku and his wife Chi-Chi.

473

He is the older brother of Son Goten, and is also the husband of Videl. He is also the father of Pan. Gohan is the first half Human, half Saiyan to appear in the series. He is named after Goku's adopted grandfather, Grandpa Son Gohan. Unlike his father, Gohan lacks a passion for fighting. Nevertheless, Gohan fights alongside the Z Fighters in the defense of planet Earth for much of his life. He eventually settles down with a family at the end of Dragon Ball Z, by opting for the life of being a normal scholar instead.

Background

Dbz171-17

Gohan as an Infant.

Son Gohan was born in May of Age 757, about a year after Son Goku and Chi-Chi had just gotten married following the conclusion of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. As a newborn infant, he went on for many hours without a name until Goku's late grandfather's name was mentioned by Chi-Chi, in which Gohan liked as he happily laughed at upon hearing it multiple times. Once, Goku and Chi-Chi were walking through a meadow with Gohan on a stroller, but the stroller was however accidentally released when Goku let's go of it, causing them to chase after it. Gohan who was crying was then sent flying out of the stroller, but his latent powers' brief awakening not only allowed him to survive crashing into a tree, but also plowing a huge hole right through the trunk, while also amazing Goku at the hidden power of his only son Gohan.

His early childhood was pretty much a pampered one, unlike his father's childhood. His life was relatively well balanced with a loving family, and a nice home to live in. Like his father, Gohan does not live in the city. However unlike his father Gohan was well adjusted and very intelligent for his age, but also unlike his father as a young child, he lacked any affection for kung fu fighting and was easily scared at a level that most normal young children would be. Goku then gave Gohan the four star Dragon Ball, and had put it onto a hat for him to honor his late grandpa.

Personality

As a young child, Gohan is a very shy and studious intellectual child who lacks the Saiyan fighting spirit, so he had to utilize his incredible half breed Saiyan potential and emotional reserves to protect those he loves, by becoming one of the most powerful Z Fighters. As an adult, he achieves his dream career of becoming a great scholar.

Being only half-Saiyan, Gohan is unusual in his values and personality. These unique values and personality separate him from pure Saiyans; as powerful as he is, he does not like fighting that much like Goku. However, when he is forced to fight, he shows special interest in protecting his family and friends. Like his father, Gohan has a truly pure and gentle heart, apart of having the typical Saiyan appetite and will eat just about anything.

Though he claims that he does not share the love of fighting that Goku has, Gohan does indeed love martial arts and adventures. It is also clearly obvious that he greatly enjoys being a hero, though he dislikes receiving the fame and attention that comes with being a hero and prefers to keep a low profile similar to how Goku was when he defeated King Piccolo. This is evident when he didn't acknowledge Cell's defeat at his hands to the public after Mr. Satan falsely took credibility for it. During the Zen Exhibition Match, he admitted that his Saiyan half was getting excited from the challenge as shown by Toppo of Universe 11, thus demonstrating that he actually does enjoy fighting. It is possible that he prefers not to fight due to the many gruesome and painful fights he experienced in the past, and because of these battles, Gohan has negative emotions associated with fighting. As commented by Piccolo, after Gohan transforms in to his ultimate form to fight Buu he is shown to be arrogant, and very often to let his guard down.

Besides concerning himself with his family (and his studies), Gohan has a strong attachment with his mentor: his father's former archrival Piccolo. After the death of Goku, Piccolo chose to train Gohan as he had sensed the boy's potential power, which would be harnessed to help defend the Earth from the attack of the Saiyans. At first, the relationship with Piccolo is a frightening one and a rocky start, but after just one year, Piccolo admits his change because of the friendship he develops with Gohan and even sacrifices himself to save the boy. Because of this, Piccolo can be considered as a surrogate father for Gohan. Krillin also has influence on Gohan, as almost an uncle/nephew relationship, mainly because Krillin is Goku's closest friend. While Gohan does care about his mother, he like his father has a fear of her temper to the point in Dragon Ball Super he informs his mother that Goku planned to leave to train under Whis, stating that he had to tell her for his own safety, though fortunately Chi-Chi surprisingly calmed down after Goku left with Whis. However Gohan will defy his mother if it is important as he tells his mother off after she refuses to let him go to Namek to revive Piccolo using the Namekian Dragon Balls, due to feeling responsible for Piccolo's death at the hands of Nappa.

After the battle with Cell, Gohan gives up martial arts to focus on his studies instead and only resumed his training at the behest of his little brother Goten. Although he acknowledged that he had fallen out of practice and lacked the fighting expertise of his father and Vegeta, Gohan gave all that he had as he fought Majin Buu and was eager to kill Buu for murdering his family and friends. In the years to come, he continued to train on-and-off while having a career and being a family man. He marries Videl, with who he fell in love despite her being Mr. Satan's only daughter, and has a daughter named Pan. Gohan proves to be a loving husband and doting father who takes delight in lavishing his daughter with attention and affection.

After witnessing the death of Piccolo, Videl and Pan at the hands of Frieza in the timeline erased by Whis' Temporal Do-Over, Gohan realizes that he must get much stronger in order to protect them. Because of this, he asks Piccolo to train him once again. To which, by the time of the Tournament of Power, Gohan has become considerably more powerful than before, although it is unclear as to how much more powerful he has become as Piccolo has stated that Gohan's power is truly bottomless and that he can continue to further strengten himself to new heights. However, despite reawakening his power, Piccolo points out his tendency to become arrogant and let his guard down could prove disastrous for Team Universe 7 during the tournament so Piccolo tries to discipline Gohan in order to break this dangerous habit. After witnessing his son's newfound power, fighting instincts and keeping in mind his keen intellect, Goku makes the decision to step aside from the role of Team Captain and appoints Gohan as the Captain of Team Universe 7 after their fight, stating Gohan's power is similar to his own and his intelligence makes him ideal for the role. Gohan has also expressed the desire to surpass his father by his own terms and methods, choosing to focus on empowering his Ultimate form - which is his true and uninhibited power rather than depend on the Super Saiyan transformations.

Appearance

Dbz171-26

Gohan at age 11. (9 in the Japanese version)

Gohan's appearance changes drastically through out Dragon Ball Z, due to the fact that the series starts out with him as a child and ends when he is fully grown, married, and with a child of his own. But Gohan's basic physical appearance pretty much stays the same through the course of the series. Gohan has black hair and black eyes. He has his father's facial features, and also has his mother's light peach complexion rather than his father's light tan. Gohan is also quite muscularly developed for his age. As an adult, he is at a similar height to Goku, but he is also a fairly thinner person.

When Gohan is first introduced, he wears a child's outfit with his family name, 'Son', written on the front and the Four-Star Dragon Ball attached to his hat, the same Dragon Ball in which Goku believed that his grandpa's spirit resided. Before he transforms into Great Ape and mostly appears in the ending theme of the anime, Gohan wears a white tank top and his green pants and black shoes from his child attire.

While training with Piccolo, he wears an outfit similar to Goku's original, with the Ma symbol (魔) King Piccolo wore after he reverted back to his human form from his Great Ape form and his tail was removed also by Piccolo until it grows back during his fight against Prince Vegeta. After training with Piccolo, he has a mullet-type haircut and dons a similar attire to the Namek warrior which he continues to wear until the end of the Captain Ginyu Saga, after which he wears Battle Armor that was given to him by Vegeta. He would continue to wear clothing similar to Piccolo's for the majority of his childhood, but his hair trended closer to his father's wild self-cut style. During the Androids Saga, he now has long hair and retains the same outfit that he wore in the Saiyan Saga and the Frieza Saga, but now wears black kung-fu shoes and white shin guards instead of brown grass shoes. While training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he begins wearing Saiyan training gear. He reverts back to Piccolo's clothing for the Cell Games. During this time his hair is spiky much like Goku's.

Screenshot 2018-01-09-12-06-58-1

Gohan at age 18 (16 in the Japanese version)

As a teenager, he alternates between a school uniform, his Great Saiyaman costume, a blue gi similar to the Piccolo clothing (except larger in size), a replica of the gi his father Goku wore while he was alive. His obi, wrist bands and shin guards are red but in the movie Broly: The Second Coming, His shin guards are reverted back to white, and during the Buu Saga, he wears Kai clothing given to him by Kibito. His hair is much shorter and stands on end in a spiky formation. In his fight against Super Buu and reuniting with his father and Vegeta after they defeated Kid Buu, Gohan wears an outfit identical to his father, Goku's and his outfit in Bojack Unbound. At the party for the celebration of the defeat of Kid Buu, he wears a blue suit as part of his formal clothing.

As an adult in the end of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan's hair would be similar to how it was in the Buu Arc minus the bang. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Gohan's wears glasses, a blue vest with a long white undershirt, and brown slacks with black shoes.

In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Gohan's hair has flattened compared to how it was in the Buu Saga. He wears a grey collar shirt with red pants. On Frieza's arrival on Earth, he wears a green tracksuit because he forgot his gi at home.

In Dragon Ball Super, Gohan tends to wear formal clothing as he studies to become a professor. In the Battle of Gods Saga, Gohan wears the same vest, pants, and shoes as he wore in the Battle of Gods movie. During the Resurrection ‘F’ Saga, Gohan wears a grey collar shirt with red pants as he did in the Resurrection ‘F’ movie. Gohan has lost his gi after not using it for a while. After he resumes training with Piccolo, Gohan slicks up his hair again to have spiky ends.

In Dragon Ball GT, he retains his hairstyle from the end of Dragon Ball Z and is usually seen dressed as like a professor or a businessman, in a suit and a tie. He also wears eyeglasses, even though he shows no sign of actually needing them, due to the fact that he does not need them to fight. It is possible, however, that these are reading glasses of some kind, as opposed to general corrective glasses. When facing Omega Shenron, Gohan wears a gi resembling that of the ones Goku used to wear throughout Dragon Ball Z.

In the Assault on the Hell Gate Saga, GT Gohan wears a gi identical to Piccolo's, although without the cape and turban.

After becoming a Time Patroller, Gohan's appearance is Gohan with his Ultimate Gohan-look, but with informal martial arts clothes almost identical to Xeno Trunks', most notably a black trench coat. He also wears glasses, like in his appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’.

Abilities

Daizenshuu 2 states that Son Gohan's dormant power is bottomless. As a young child during the battle against Raditz, when angered, Gohan's power level raises to 710 and then further to 1,307, before falling to 1 after attacking Raditz. Gohan gets more powerful after training for the battle against the Saiyans with Piccolo: his power level is 1,000 when confronting Nappa and Vegeta, and it rises up to 2,800 when using his Masenko on Nappa. After his potential was unlocked by Grand Elder Guru, Gohan's power level rises to 14,000. After the battle against the Ginyu Force, by the time he, Vegeta, and Kuririn begin fighting Frieza, Gohan's power level is 200,000; when his anger rises during his battles with the different forms of Frieza, he is able to knock the tyrant around several times and even cause him some damage. Gohan's power level is 6,000 during the events of the movie World's Strongest,[9] and Turles' scouter later reads Gohan's power level as 10,000 during the events of the movie The Tree of Might. When he has his tail held by Dore in Cooler's Revenge, Gohan's power level drops to 50.

Gohan's power grows even higher before and during the Androids/Cell Sagas, as he trains with his father and attains the Super Saiyan form as a teen. Gohan's potential is greater than his father's and his power surpassed Perfect Cell's when he fought in the Cell Games, but his gentle heart stopped him from fully using it. Gohan eventually attains Super Saiyan 2, at which point he becomes stronger than any of the other Z Fighters and Perfect Cell.

By the time of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, due to lack of training, Gohan is no longer as strong as he was during the Cell Games but is powerful enough to fight Dabura and also hold off the fat Majin Buu for a short time. However, after training with the Z Sword, Supreme Kai believes that Gohan will be able to defeat the fat Majin Buu. After the Z Sword is broken Gohan has his potential unlocked further by the Old Kai, as Ultimate Gohan, he surpasses Super Saiyan 2 and even Super Saiyan 3 (according to the Super Exciting Battle Guide; he is confirmed stronger than Gotenks in the manga/anime). Ultimate Gohan is able to defeat Super Buu in his regular state, and holds his own against him after he absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, before eventually being bested by Buu's superior strength.

In the story of the PSP game Shin Budokai, which is set two years after Kid Buu's defeat, Piccolo states that Gohan grew even stronger than he previously was the last time they met. In his base form, Gohan is implied to be far stronger than Androids arc Gohan in his base form, as he far surpasses his younger counterpart even when suppressing his power. Majin Vegeta, who has been possessed and further been empowered by an evil copy of himself, states that Gohan is "a monster with power beyond legend" upon encountering him.

In Dragon Ball GT, Gohan in his base form is shown to have similar power to Super Saiyan Baby Goten, as when the two fight they both tire out at the same time and Gohan is able to resist Baby Goten's attacks without much damage. Baby himself references base Gohan as being stronger than Super Saiyan Goten at one point.

Full-Nelson

Gohan uses this hold as the Great Saiyaman in order to restrain Videl when the latter tries to attack him, thinking he is kidnapping Chobi from the Musuka Circus, while he was in fact returning him to his parents.

Leave My Daddy Alone!

Gohan charges at the opponent with a headbutt powered by a fiery aura around his body. He used this attack in anger against Raditz after the evil Saiyan tormented Goku. Also called Charge!. Crushing in Hands - The user grabs his opponent in a powerful hand grip and crushes his/her bones. Thrust Counterattack - Gohan dodges the opponent's attack, punches them with his left fist, and then punches them away with his right fist, inflicting a high amount of damage. Angry Blow - Gohan kicks the opponent to stun them, then lands a strong punch and finally kicks them away.

Quiet Rage

Gohan punches his opponent up in the air and flies after them to knock them to the ground with a hand chop. Then he teleports to the ground and kicks the falling opponent back up into the air. Used this attack to kill the remaining Cell Juniors.

Explosive Demon Impact

Gohan attacks the opponent with a kick to their face and another kick to their stomach. Used against Perfect Cell, making him regurgitate Android 18 and reverting him to his Semi-Perfect form. This is one of Teen Gohan's Super Attacks in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.

Explosive Combination

Gohan punches the opponent's stomach and punches them again up into the air. Then, he teleports behind them and attacks them with a kick followed by a large blue energy wave. He used this attack during his battle against Dabura. This is one of Adult Gohan's Super Attacks in his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.

Burst Rush

Ultimate Gohan kicks the opponent up into the air and flies up and attacks with a barrage of punches before sending them flying upward. He then flies after the opponent and knocks them into the ground, where he finally blasts them with a Super Kamehameha. Named in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.

I'm Here to Kill You

Ultimate Gohan kicks the opponent in the stomach, followed by a 360-spin kick to the head, ending with a left hook to the back of the head, knocking the opponent to the ground. He used this attack during his battle with Super Buu. Named in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.

Hidden Potential

Gohan charges an energy sphere around his body and fires a large energy wave while flying towards the opponent. He used this attack to destroy a large boulder he was thrown at by Piccolo. This is one of his ultimate attacks in his kid form in Burst Limit and in the Raging Blast series.

Masenko

Gohan's first and most used attack. Its origins are from Piccolo, who presumably taught the attack to Gohan while training together in the wilderness, although this is never shown. He holds his hands crossed with the palms facing forward above his head, creating a yellow-colored energy sphere. Then he throws his hands forward and fires the yellow beam, with the beam's pattern almost similar to the Kamehameha. The English version incorrectly identified this attack as a Kamehameha.

Combined Masenko

This is when Gohan and Future Trunks merge their two Masenko blasts into a bigger and more powerful version of the Masenko. They use it against the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Ultimate Masenko

The strongest version of the Masenko used by Kid Gohan. He has this attack as his ultimate move in Burst Limit and Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World.

Masendan

First, Gohan puts his hands above his head like the normal Masenko, but keeps charging it until it forms an energy sphere. Then, he grabs the energy sphere with his hand and draws it back up to his side. Finally, Gohan shouts "Take this!" and throws the attack at the opponent, inflicting a great amount of damage. Gekiretsu Madan - First, Gohan raises his hands up to his sides and charges a yellow energy sphere in each hand. He then puts his hands forward and fires a barrage of yellow energy waves against the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.

Wild Rush Blaster

First, Gohan kicks his opponent a few times, he then beats them up and kicks them to one side. He holds one hand with the other supporting it upward in a fashion similar to the Explosive Demon Wave and, as he shouts "I've had enough!", he forms an energy sphere with excess energy releasing off of it in the form of medium-sized energy rings. Finally, Gohan brings his hands forward and fires a powerful yellow energy wave with a large energy sphere at the end at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.

Golden Dome Attack

First, Gohan forms a massive golden-yellow energy shield around his body. Then, he charges more power, condensing the energy shield into a large spiraling energy sphere in front of him. Finally, Gohan fires the energy sphere at the opponent in a fashion similar to an Energy wave, inflicting high amount of damage.

Special Beam Cannon

A very powerful beam fired by charging a lot of energy into your index and middle finger in front of your forehead and then extending your arm to fire. Gohan used Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon while Image Training with Krillin on their way to Namek. In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Future Gohan is able to perform this technique in his Super Saiyan form. In Shin Budokai - Another Road, Future Gohan can use Special Beam Cannon on Base State as an Ultimate Move. However, in his Super Saiyan form, this is replaced with Super Kamehameha.

Kamehameha

After training with Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan masters this attack, along with the Super Saiyan levels. He holds his hands near one of his sides, creating a shiny, blue energy ball. Then he throws his palms forward to fire the beam.

Super Kamehameha

An upgraded version of the Kamehameha. The hand movements to perform the attack is the same as the Kamehameha, however the charging time takes longer due to more ki energy being put into it. Seeing as how Goku was the inventor of the upgraded version, it is likely Gohan learned it from his father. In the Budokai series, it is placed as Gohan's Ultimate Move.

Father-Son Kamehameha

GohanGokuDefeatCell

The Father-Son Kamehameha.

Gohan uses this attack only once during the entire series. When Gohan uses his Kamehameha to counter Super Perfect Cell's own, he is helped spiritually by Goku. This attack helps Gohan overpower and defeat Super Perfect Cell with a little help from Vegeta. The name was coined by the Budokai video game series, but was not mentioned as a separate attack in the anime.

Bros. Kamehameha

Gohan and Goten fire their separate Kamehameha attacks until they merge into a large Kamehameha blast. They briefly use this attack against Broly in Broly - Second Coming, until being replaced by the Family Kamehameha.

Family Kamehameha

DragonballZ-Movie10 1567

Goku and his two sons do the family Kamehameha.

Gohan uses this attack in the film Broly - Second Coming. This attack is used by Goku, Gohan, and Goten together. First, Gohan and Goten use the Bros. Kamehameha to hold off Broly's Omega Blaster. Then, the attack a short time later in the film becomes a similar move to the Father-Son Kamehameha with the arrival of Goku to help coach his sons to victory.

Justice Kamehameha

A spherical version of the Kamehameha used by Gohan in his Great Saiyaman outfit. He uses this attack in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn to blast away a crowd Zombies, scattering rotting parts everywhere.

Chou Maretsugeki

As he shouts "Watch this!", Gohan charges at the opponent and elbows them up into the air. Then, he flies up into the air and hook kicks the opponent in their stomach. Next, he attacks the opponent with a punch and a barrage of kicks before roundhouse kicking them away. Finally, Gohan flies after the opponent and hand chops them down to the ground, inflicting a massive amount of damage.

Energy Barrier

Gohan used a barrier to protect himself, Krillin, and Piccolo from being sucked into the Dead Zone and his alternate future self used this technique to block some of Android 17 and 18's blasts in their last battle. In Movie 10, Gohan used an energy barrier to protect Goten, Trunks, Videl and himself from Broly's energy blast.

Super Breath

Gohan used a far less powerful version by accident in a filler episode of Dragon Ball Z when he accidentally blew away his birthday cake.

Great Saiyaman Beam

A orange finger beam Gohan created for use as the Great Saiyaman.

Full Power Energy Blast Volley

The user fires flurries of large, bright Ki Blasts that is more powerful than the average energy volley. It is useful for quick, effective, as well as causing massive accumulations of damage to the foes. The difference with the Full Power Energy Barrage Wave is that the user does not move his hands while firing it. The waves themselves just chase the opponent.

Tenma Defense

Gohan charges his ki and lets forth a large white barrier to either knock away opponents or deflect attacks.

Continuous Energy Bullet

The user usually brings their arms to their sides, charges up ki, and then he throws his hands forward one after another as he rapidly fires many energy blasts.

Z Sword Slash

Z Sword Slash (ゼットソードスラッシュ) An attack named in Dragon Ball Heroes. Gohan jumps into the air and slashes the opponent with the Z Sword when he lands.

Great Ape

This transformation occurs when a person with Saiyan heritage (and with a tail) looks directly at a full moon, or something that simulates its effects, such as Vegeta's Power Ball. The result is the waves from the moon stimulating a gland in their tails, enabling a seemingly unavoidable transformation. This is a complete genetic transformation, so it greatly affects Gohan's mental state. Because Gohan never had any proper training, Gohan loses all form of mental control, becoming a primal beast. However during his fight against Vegeta, Goku's words were able to reach Gohan enough to regain some of his rational thought and focus on his real enemy. Gohan only transforms into this state three times throughout the series, twice while he was training with Piccolo, and one final time when fighting Vegeta. He also transforms into this state in Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might when the main villain Tullece creates a Power Ball and forces Gohan to see it, transforming him into a Great Ape. He later has his tail cut off by Goku, returning him to normal.

Unlock Potential

Unlock Potential, in truth, is not a form of Gohan but is simply an enhancement that he acquires during the Namek Saga. This term is only used in the Budokai games. Gohan acquired this when he visited Guru during his trip on Namek. Guru placed his hand on top of Gohan's head and using his own powers, released Gohan's latent potential. This, however, did not release all of Gohan's hidden power, since he was still only able to unleash his hidden power through fierce rage. Gohan's abilities were enhanced along with the strength of his hidden power, and as a side effect, continuously grew alongside Krillin with each battle, as stated by Vegeta. The first time that he receives this power-up roughly multiplies his power tenfold, allowing him to access a power in around the mid-10,000s range, though with the subsequent battles against Recoome and Frieza, he grows many times stronger. During one bout of rage, he was even able to subdue Frieza's third form. According to FUNimation dub, after this power-up, Gohan was equal to Vegeta's strength when the latter appeared on Earth (before gohan got stronger through battle).

Super Saiyan

Gohan became a Super Saiyan at nine years of age (if including the time spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber; he was around the physical age of ten), during the intense training he endured with his father to help him ascend. Gohan was the youngest to appear as a Super Saiyan until the appearance of his brother, Goten, who accesses the state effortlessly at seven years old. In this state, Gohan was called the Gold Fighter by the residents of Satan City during the Great Saiyaman Saga. After Gohan has his potential unlocked by Old Kai, his Super Saiyan form became much stronger due to his base form having powered.

By the time of Frieza's resurrection and attack on Earth, Gohan is unable to maintain his Super Saiyan form due to not training to manage its power.

Full Power Super Saiyan

GokuGohan

Goku and Gohan as full power super saiyans.

Gohan is one of the first people to display full mastery over the Super Saiyan. Gohan had learned to perfect the Super Saiyan form with his father, when his father suggested that they remain transformed for extended periods of time so that they could master Super Saiyan, including all the unwanted behavioral effects. This mastery of the Super Saiyan enables full control over the energy output and consumption, completely diminishing strain on the body. Gohan continues to use this form during the Buu Saga, particularly when training with Goten.

Super Saiyan 2

Gohan was the first and the youngest character in the series to reach Super Saiyan 2, achieving it at the age of 10 (Counting the year in the time chamber). This occurred when his dormant power was fully awakened through his rage at Perfect Cell for hurting his friends and killing the peaceful Android 16 (though it was revealed in an anime-only flashback by Goku that Gohan actually achieved the transformed state while training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but was too exhausted to maintain the form). While in this form, Gohan's hair stands straight up with the exception of one lock that hangs down, and he is surrounded by aura electricity all the times. One thing is quite noticeable when he in particular manifests this transformation: his nature is prone to complete change, giving him an almost sadistic sense of mind. This is completely opposite of his natural reluctance and innocence when he is not transformed. The most noted example of this happening is his desire to watch Perfect Cell suffer before he was going to kill him, while prior to ascending to Super Saiyan 2, he made it quite clear that he did not want to hurt or even fight Cell, let alone kill him.

In addition to his battle with Cell, Gohan uses this form to defeat Bojack in Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound and to fight Broly in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming. Seven years later, he uses it during the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament when Kibito asked him to demonstrate his Super Saiyan powers so that they may lure out Babidi's men; he instead makes the full jump to Super Saiyan 2, only to have Supreme Kai paralyze him so that his power may be drained (and subsequently returned, by Kibito) as to lure out Spopovich and Yamu, and lead them towards Babidi's spaceship. When Gohan makes a jump to Super Saiyan 2, his hair grows longer around the sides and a bit at the top, similar to regular Super Saiyan, with the exception that his hair stands up more, gets more spiky and he gains one hair bang instead of two. He also fights Majin Buu in this form, but loses and is nearly killed. But when Gohan fought Majin Buu he was weaker than when he fought Cell. After training with the Z Sword he grew much stronger as he was able to wield the sword perfectly in his base form not needing to transform raising his base power so that when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 1 or 2 his power would increase making him stronger. After training with the Z Sword, Supreme Kai believes Super Saiyan 2 Gohan can beat Majin Buu. After Gohan has his potential unlocked by Old Kai, his Super Saiyan 2 form, though never seen, became much stronger due to his base form having powered up.

Super Saiyan 3

Although Gohan does not transform into a Super Saiyan 3 in the original manga/anime, he attains this form in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes, introduced in the fourth mission of the God Mission series (GDM4). Like his future counterpart, his Super Saiyan 3 form also possesses two hair bangs instead of just one unlike his father. He is also seen using Piccolo's outfit, including his cape, exactly the one he wore during the Cell Games except in a bigger size. In this form, he also attains a new technique called Hyper Masenko Wave, which is a stronger version of the Masenko technique. This transformation is a result of what would've happened if Gohan continued to train under Piccolo in the years following the Cell Games.

Great Saiyaman

The Great Saiyaman (グレートサイヤマン) is Gohan's alter ego and an attempt to hide his true identity from his classmates when he attended school in Satan City. The Great Saiyaman was first born when Gohan transformed himself into a Super Saiyan in order to disguise himself as he fought some bank robbers on the morning on his first day to school. However, his classmates (and in particular, Videl) began to note strange similarities between himself and the mysterious "Gold Fighter" (as they described his Super Saiyan form). Concerned that his identity might be figured out, but wanting to protect the city from random crime, he approached Bulma and asked her if she could invent a device that could instantly change his appearance. With his new costume ready and easily accessible with the press of a button, he could now protect the city without his identity being easily discovered.

Despite the new disguise and protection of his identity being discovered, the Great Saiyaman identity still did not ensure Gohan's identity from being safe. Juggling between his school and superhero life proved to be difficult, and his classmates and teachers noticed that he was gone for a long period of time when he asked for bathroom breaks. Also, Videl proved to be a thorn in Gohan's side, as she was both reluctant to accept assistance from him and most importantly wanted to discover his true identity. At one time, the Great Saiyaman's true identity was in jeopardy of being discovered when he changed from being the Great Saiyaman to his normal form and noticed that his classmate Angela was standing in front of him during his change; however, he was saved when she revealed that she did not have her contact lenses on at that time and could not see anything, and that her big secret about Gohan was the fact that he wears teddy bear underwear.

Gohan's luck ran out when Videl eventually discovered his true identity when she noticed that Gohan had a band-aid to cover up a scratch to the face he received while fighting alongside with her under his disguise. Alternately, in the manga, Videl discovers his true identity much sooner. The first time Gohan sneaks out of school to help Videl with some criminals, she recognizes his voice (implying he was not altering it like in the anime). She then tricked him into revealing his identity by asking "By the way, Gohan...how'd you sneak out of class?", which he responded to honestly before realizing what had happened. However, she promised him that she would not reveal his identity if he promised her two things: to enter in the World Martial Arts Tournament and to teach her how to fly, to which he reluctantly agreed. During the Tournament however, his friends learned of his true identity when they noticed the great similarities between Gohan and the Great Saiyaman (Gohan forgot to put his bandanna on after turning Super Saiyan in anger after seeing Videl's match with Spopovich).

Incidentally on the same day, he transformed into a Super Saiyan again at Kibito's behest, confirming to both Videl and his friends that he was also the Gold Fighter as well. Videl then realized that Gohan was the young boy who also competed in the Cell Games tournament, and therefore questioned whether her dad really won the Cell Games Tournament or not (even going so far as to realize that it was Gohan who defeated Super Perfect Cell in the anime). After the demise of Kid Buu, Gohan continued to fight crime as the Great Saiyaman alongside Videl, who now had the identity of the Great Saiyaman 2; nonetheless, he eventually retired from heroics to become a scholar.

All the incarnations of the Great Saiyaman costume were made by Bulma. The costume initially consists of a green tunic, black tights, white gloves and boots similar to those used in Battle Armor uniform, a red cape, and an orange-and-black helmet with a visor. Because the rules of the World Martial Arts Tournament forbid any type of armor, Gohan swapped out the helmet in favor of a white bandana and sunglasses, similar to the hero of the 1960s TV show Kaiketsu Harimao. He maintained the sunglasses and bandana look for the Saiyaman identity after the defeat of Kid Buu, and subsequently abandoned the red cape.

The name "Saiyaman" is a reference to Gohan's Saiyan heritage. He thought up the name on the spot while confronting two youths who were speeding in a car, and was easily offended when they laughed at his name. Later, the name was frequently mistaken for others, such as the "Great Soyman" or the "Great Singing man", which further aggravated Gohan. He was also noted for his comical poses (comparable to or even more ridiculous than the poses of the Ginyu Force) he would perform when introducing himself, and was generally written off as hilarious or weird. Nonetheless, he was still a respected hero within Satan City. While in this disguise, Gohan still uses his energy-based techniques, such as the Super Explosive Wave and Ki Blasts.

Ultimate Gohan

Ultimate Gohan full

Ultimate Gohan meet Super Buu

This power-up is when the full extent of his dormant capacities are released, in this state he is referred to as Ultimate Gohan (究極のごはん). It was achieved during the Fusion Saga and is also referred to as Mightiest Warrior and Strongest Warrior. This power up was achieved by a special ceremony performed by Old Kai. Although technically this ability is not exclusive to Gohan alone as the ceremony can be used to unlock anyone's sleeping powers, his was unusual in the amount of time it took to unlock due to his amazing potential. Thanks to his potential unlock, his base form becomes much stronger - eclipsing that of Gotenks in his Super Saiyan 3 form and Super Buu (Piccolo absorbed) - and thus his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms power up as well, with his Super Saiyan form's appearance also altering slightly. Gohan activates this ability in a similar fashion to the Super Saiyan transformation and only subtle differences are present, including more pronounced facial features, more upright hair (similar to Super Saiyan 2), and a large, white aura - his Potential Unleashed state acting as the equivalent - and granting the same amount of power - to a hypothetical Super Saiyan 3 form achievable by Gohan.

After five years without any training however Ultimate Gohan proved it to be difficult to access his full power, despite him trying to do so. Still, even in his base form, he possesses power greater than the Super Namekian Piccolo and on par with Tagoma thanks to the potential unlock. When transforming into a Super Saiyan, he effortlessly defeats Shisami (in the movie) or Ginyu with Tagoma's body (in the anime), however he can only use it for a short period of time. Pushing his power to maximum as a Super Saiyan proved great enough for Goku to sense him from Beerus' planet, but quickly over-stressed Gohan's body and left him in a near-death state.

In the anime, some time after Beerus and Champa's tournament, Gohan seems to have reconditioned himself from his training with Piccolo.

Baby Gohan

During the events of Dragon Ball GT, Gohan is possessed by Baby (while under Baby's control he is named Baby Gohan), and then later by a regular Tuffle parasite. This state of Gohan makes its debut for the first time as a playable character in Dragon Ball Heroes, as both base and Super Saiyan forms.

Super Saiyan 4

Gohan achieves this form in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes since the fifth mission of the God Mission series (GDM5). In this form, Gohan's hair grows identically to Goku's and Vegeta's and he has his bang back (although in the same position he has during the "Ultimate" state). Red fur appears covering the upper part of his body and he wears a died purple pants with Piccolo's shoes. He also gains a new technique called Ultimate Flying Dragon Fist, which he punches the opponent and then he launches an uppercut with an image of a dragon hitting the opponent very fast.

Xeno Gohan

In his base form he has comparable power to Future Trunks, as they are able to fuse together. As a Super Saiyan, Xeno Gohan is able to hold off base Mira and Demon Gods Towa and Dabura. As a Super Saiyan 4 Xeno Gohan is able to assist Super Saiyan 4 Xeno Gogeta in his fight against Dark Gogeta, with Xeno Gohan's attacks being capable of blowing Dark Gogeta away even when the Majin was blocking. His Kamehameha is so powerful that he destroyed Shroom in his advanced Demon God state although he became exhausted afterwards.

Saiyans arc

"Leave my dad... ALONE!!!"
— Gohan ready to attack Raditz (English Version)

Despite Goku's protests, Chi-Chi home-schools Gohan to be a scholar until he is four, before Goku takes him to Kame Island to introduce him to Master Roshi, Bulma and Krillin. At this time, he is shown as a shy, but very smart boy who also has a tail like Goku once had before it was removed. He is also very sensitive and appears cowardly at some times. While Goku reunites and talks with his old friends, Gohan rides on Turtle's back, and plays Rock-Paper-Scissors with a crab, enjoying himself. After Goku's brother, Raditz, explains his Saiyan origins and attacks Goku with ease, he kidnaps Gohan, putting Goku at a stalemate, that if he does not kill 100 humans by the next day, Raditz will eliminate his nephew. Gohan soon gets locked up in Raditz's space pod, because Raditz cannot stand his constant crying. It is during this time that Raditz discovers that Gohan is potentially far stronger than Goku himself.

During the battle between Goku, Raditz, and Piccolo, Gohan becomes angry and breaks free of the space pod he is being held captive in when he spots Raditz torturing Goku by repeatedly kicking one of Goku's broken ribs. He delivers a devastating blow to Raditz, giving Goku and Piccolo time to kill the evil Saiyan, though Goku dies in the process as well.

After the battle with Raditz, Piccolo, having seen Gohan's power first hand, decides to take

011-01

Gohan out training in the wilderness. He leaves Gohan alone to survive against dinosaurs and other dangers for six months, though during this time he watches Gohan carefully. During the first six night, while complaining about the sour flavor of the apples Piccolo has given him, Gohan accidentally looks at a full moon and transforms into a Great Ape. Piccolo destroys the moon, causing Gohan to revert into his normal form before Gohan destroys too much of the land. Piccolo yanks his tail off, then reconstitutes his clothing, giving him a uniform similar to Goku's. The difference: it bears the Demon symbol, to symbolize him being Piccolo's student. For the rest of the year, Piccolo shows no mercy as he teaches Gohan how to fight. Soon, Gohan's bright and cheerful nature makes Piccolo protective over the young boy. As the boy grows on Piccolo, the two of them have a few conversations about Piccolo's past and why he did the things he did and Gohan tells Piccolo he thinks he is not as bad as everyone has told him.

Eventually, the time comes for the Z Fighters to take on the remaining two Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo senses the Saiyans making their approach and tells Gohan to be ready, when he suddenly senses a third ki from another direction? They think it is another Saiyan but soon find out that it is Krillin who joins them to fight the Saiyans. The Saiyans find them and before the fight starts, they decide to test their Saibamen against the Z Fighters. Soon Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu join them in the fight. While Yamcha and one Saibaman fight, Gohan cannot keep with their speed through his eyes alone, so Piccolo orders Gohan to concentrate and find them using Ki Sense, which Gohan is eventually able to master quickly. After Yamcha is killed and the six Saibamen are eventually destroyed and Nappa begins to fight, Gohan is able to sometime control his fear but becomes frightened and hides behind rocks at times his age catches up with him. This prevents him from being very effective in the battle, except for short intervals, such as a point when he single-handedly kicks Nappa through a boulder. During one part of the battle, Piccolo hatches a plan for Gohan to blast Nappa after Piccolo has kicked him towards Krillin, and Krillin then will kick Nappa towards Gohan for the attack. The first two thirds of the plan work accordingly, but when it is Gohan's turn, Gohan cowers behind more boulders, botching the plan, resulting in Piccolo calling him a worthless coward. When Vegeta gives the group three hours for Goku to arrive, Piccolo loses all hope in Gohan, and after some bickering, he orders Gohan to go home. However, Gohan refuses and even realizes Nappa would not let him go away.

When the fight continues after Goku fails to arrive on time, Gohan regains his confidence and does his best to amend for his previous cowardice. Piccolo hatches another plan for Gohan to attack Nappa after Krillin distracts him and Piccolo grabs his tail. Though Gohan quickly goes on the assault, the plan fails when Nappa is shown to have overcome his tail's weakness. Eventually, when Nappa fires a lethal energy blast at Gohan, Piccolo throws himself in front of Gohan and takes the impact. Gohan watches his mentor slowly die, and while Piccolo confesses his true bond with Gohan, Gohan's emotions once again take over, starting to cry in extreme anger. Once Piccolo slowly passes on, Gohan in turn fires a powerful Masenko at Nappa, which does only minimal damage to his arm. With that last Masenko consuming all the energy he had left, Gohan decides to give up and meet his fate, despite Krillin's protests for him to run. He is almost squashed by Nappa, but is saved by the Flying Nimbus when the resurrected Goku finally arrives to the battle. After eating a Senzu Bean with Krillin, he watches Goku overpowering Nappa. When Vegeta kills Nappa, Goku tells Gohan to let him battle Vegeta alone, not wanting Gohan to get hurt again.

Later on, after Vegeta turns into a Great Ape using a Power Ball and injures Goku, Gohan returns to the battle. After Yajirobe chops off Vegeta's tail, making him transform back, Gohan fights Vegeta alone while Krillin and a broken Goku prepare to fire a Spirit Bomb, the last resort. Krillin fires the Spirit Bomb, but misses. Gohan bounces it back, hitting Vegeta, but not killing him. Gohan himself transforms into a Great Ape after looking at Vegeta's Power Ball. He defeats Vegeta by landing on him after Vegeta cuts his tail with a Destructo Disk. Afterwards, Goku lets Vegeta go, hoping to one day face him again.

Namek & Frieza arc

"Frieza's going to hunt me down wherever I go. The last thing I want to do is lead him back to Earth."
— Gohan talking to Bulma before leaving to fight Frieza alone. (English Version)
GohanNewPowersNamek

After recovering from his injuries in West City hospital, Wukong Hospital, Gohan chose to go to the planet Namek with Kuririn and Bulma to gather the Namekian Dragon Balls to bring back his friends back to life, because Piccolo's death caused Kami's death too, which caused the Earth's Dragon Balls to turn to stone. Gohan was on a personal mission to wish back Piccolo, and went so far as to wear a copy of Piccolo's dogi to honor him.

After their long trip, with a few sidetracks, they finally make it to Namek, where they find out Vegeta has also come seeking the Dragon Balls, along with his former far more powerful boss. While scouting the planet with Kuririn, Gohan spots Frieza and his minions, Zarbon and Dodoria, tormenting Namekian villagers. When Gohan sees Dodoria, one of Frieza's top henchmen, attack a little Namekian child named Dende[[, he goes out and attacks him. Afterwards, Dodoria chases Gohan, Kuririrn and Dende, but they eventually lose him and Vegeta kills Dodoria. Dende leads Gohan and Kuririn to Grand Elder Guru, the ruler of the Nameks, where he unlocks both of their hidden potential.

Later, Gohan steals a Dragon Ball that Vegeta has hid in a lake for himself, and even tricks Vegeta who runs into him on his way back from retrieving the ball. Vegeta figures this out eventually and becomes enraged, but the arrival of the Ginyu Force makes Vegeta have to form an alliance with Gohan and Krillin in order to get all the Dragon Balls and put up a fight against Frieza's feared Special Forces. Unfortunately, when they gather all of the Dragon Balls, they are ambushed by the Ginyu Force. The weakest of them, Guldo, is to take on Kuririn and Gohan, but fails as Vegeta steps in and decapitates him with his hand.

Then, when Vegeta is fighting a losing battle against Recoome, Kuririn and Gohan step in and fight, but it is still not enough. Gohan is on the brink of death until Goku shows up with Senzu Beans. Son Goku takes on the rest of them, but has his body switched by Captain Ginyu. With Goku completely weak in Captain Ginyu's body, Gohan has to try to fight Captain Ginyu in his father's body (although he is initially reluctant to do so, despite knowing it is not his dad, as he still feels he is injuring his dad by doing so). Captain Ginyu is unable to fully figure out Goku's powers and after a short fight with Gohan, Kuririn, and Goku in Ginyu's body, Vegeta kills Jeice and ultimately defeats Ginyu. After Captain Ginyu ends up in a frog's body, Gohan and the others gather the Namekian Dragon Balls and wish for Piccolo to be brought back to life on Namek.

Shortly after, Frieza ambushes them, making them stall for Piccolo to come. In the Z Fighters' battle against Frieza's second form, Kuririn is injured by the tyrant and is sent into the depths of the water below. Gohan rushes to save his friend from drowning, but Frieza stops him. Getting angry, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks followed by the Gekiretsu Madan (a massive wave of energy blasts) that brings the tyrant to his knees.

When Piccolo arrives on the battle field, he fights an even battle against Frieza while Gohan and the others watch in amazement. However, Frieza transforms into his third transformation and gains the upper hand against Piccolo. Seeing this, Gohan becomes enraged and attacks Frieza with the Full Power Masenko, hindering Frieza for a few minutes. Eventually, Frieza manages to deflect the attack back at Gohan, who is saved by Piccolo when he destroys the attack with a Ki Blast. Frieza then transforms into his final form, and as his first act, kills Dende, who had been healing the Z Fighters. Frieza then tries to kill Gohan with a Death Beam, but Vegeta saves the young Saiyan by kicking him out of the way of the blast. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo watch in horror as Vegeta gets brutally beaten by Frieza until Goku arrives. In the end, Vegeta meets his end at the hands of Frieza, who kills him with a Death Beam.

Gohan and the others are left on the sidelines while Goku fights an even battle against Frieza. However, things turn bad when Frieza powers up to 50% of his power and gains the upper hand against Goku, who desperately attempts to use the Spirit Bomb. In order to buy Goku some time, Gohan and Kuririn lend their energy to Piccolo so he can stall Frieza enough for Goku to complete his Large Spirit Bomb. It proves successful and Frieza is plummeted into the depths of the Spirit Bomb, heavily injuring him.

Believing the tyrant to be dead, the heroes relax and prepare to go back home to Earth, until Frieza appears on top of a boulder and reveals to be alive. Frieza mortally wounds Piccolo, overwhelming Gohan with horror and grief at the presumed death of his mentor and friend. Next, Frieza kills Kuririn, by telekinetically blowing him up into pieces, which enrages Goku and allows him to transform into a Super Saiyan. He assertively orders Gohan to take Piccolo and retrieve Bulma and take them to the ship that he traveled in and use it to head back to Earth. Reluctantly obeying his father's wishes, Gohan leaves the battle field with the unconscious Piccolo.

Gohan finally reaches Goku's ship and lays Piccolo there. As he examines Piccolo's wound, a computer screen turns on and Chi-Chi and Master Roshi appear on the other side, from the ship on Earth. Gohan relays the news that Frieza killed Kuririn and Goku is fighting Frieza, and leaves to find Bulma. Gohan finally finds Bulma and gets her to Goku's spaceship. Bulma is briefly frightened by Piccolo's presence, although he is unconscious, and suggests leaving Piccolo on Namek, to Gohan's frustration. Terrified at Namek's impending explosion, Bulma attempts to start the ship to leave, but Gohan, despite Goku's orders to leave, refuses. Bulma grudgingly agrees to wait longer.

Later, when he senses that his father is supposedly dead, Gohan returns to the fight to stall Frieza before Namek explodes. However, despite his best efforts, he is unable to stall Frieza as the tyrant taunts him and he is not fighting, in addition to Frieza deducing the real reason Gohan is attempting to fight him. However, Gohan then senses that his father is still alive and powers up. Next, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks, knocking him to the ground and finally blasting him with a Super Masenko. Unfortunately, Frieza appears unaffected by the attack and powers up to full power again, saying that Gohan is a true Saiyan and that is why Frieza must kill him. However, before Frieza can kill Gohan, Goku rises up from the ocean below and tells Gohan to get off Namek.

Gohan flies away from the fight and encourages his father to win. As Gohan is flying back to the spaceship, he and the others are later transported to Earth by Porunga while Goku is left finishing the battle with Frieza on the dying planet Namek. On Earth, Grand Elder Guru explains to Gohan and everyone that they were all wished to Earth in order to escape from Namek's explosion, but Goku chose to remain on Namek in order to ensure Frieza's defeat. Grand Elder Guru realizes that it is now time for him to die again, this time of natural causes. The Namekians gather around Guru to pay him their final respects and, to their fury, realize that no one from Elder Tsuno's village is present, since they were murdered by Vegeta and not Frieza, and thus not brought back. Guru passes the power of the Namekian Dragon Balls to the second eldest Namekian, Moori, and disappears after bidding his children farewell. Gohan reflects on how Guru unlocked his hidden potential to help him do battle with the Ginyu Force. Gohan, Dende and Piccolo promise not to let Guru down, and regret how Kuririn could not see this. Dende then tells them that Kuririn can be revived with the Namekian Dragon Balls, since Porunga can revive someone more than once as long as the death was not natural, Gohan is delighted with the news.

Bulma tries to cheer herself up by predicting Goku's fate with fortune telling leaves: she draws a circle in the ground and places three leaves inside it, planning to burn them. If they all burn, it means Goku will return safely. Dende sets fire to them, but the wind blows them away before they can burn completely. Gohan scoffs at it, confident that Goku will survive.

After Goku wins the battle, but is caught in planet Namek's explosion, Gohan and the others mourn the Saiyan warrior's apparent death. Hope seems lost for Goku and Kuririn. Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and Bulma are left devastated. But Vegeta hides his remorse for Goku's apparent death by pretending to be pleased and happy about it. This time, Gohan becomes enraged to the point that he challenges Vegeta to a fight. Despite landing a few good hits, Vegeta subdues Gohan and only stops when Piccolo intervenes and tells him to "back off". Frustrated at Gohan's inability to face the truth like a man, Vegeta flies off. Dende heals Gohan's injuries, but all are still emotionally hurt from the loss of their friend.

Months later, they are allowed to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to wish Goku back to life. However, they are shocked after the Eternal Dragon Porunga refuses the wish that Goku be brought back to life, but everyone rejoices once the Dragon explains that Goku did not die from Namek's explosion. So Gohan and the others use their next wish to restore Kuririn to life. The Earthlings then use their last wish to restore Yamcha. Another 130 days later, Porunga is summoned again. The first wish is to revive Chaozu, the second wish to bring back Tien, and the third to wish the Namekians to a distant, vacant planet discovered by King Kai to have a similar atmosphere to Namek. After bidding a tearful farewell to Gohan, Dende vanishes from the Earth along with the other Nameks, and Porunga and the Namekian Dragon Balls follow. The Z Fighters' long mission to revive their fallen comrades now complete. During this time of peace, everyone awaits the arrival of Goku, and Gohan goes back to his studies while Piccolo watches over him and his mother.

Garlic Jr. arc

While everyone on Earth is waiting for Goku to come back, Garlic Jr. escapes from the Dead Zone, and enslaves most of humanity with the Black Water Mist. Gohan, who is unaffected due to hiding in a cave with his dragon friend Icarus, is forced to travel to the lookout point to save his mother and friends, together with Piccolo, Krillin, and his new girlfriend Maron, who is left at Korin Tower.

He has to do battle with Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, the Spice Boys, and after killing them, he has to face his friends: Krillin and Piccolo. Luckily, it turns out that these two are only pretending to be evil so they can free Kami and Mr. Popo. While outmatched at first, after a reunion with his friends, Gohan eventually manages to overcome and send Garlic Jr. back to the Dead Zone by blowing up the Makyo Star that is powering the villain. This would be the first time Gohan has saved the world without his father's help.

Androids & Cell arc

"Yes! We're going to make it through this without losing anyone!"
— Gohan excited after seeing Piccolo dominate Android 20 (English Version)

A year after Goku defeated Frieza on Namek, Gohan and Chi-Chi still wait for Goku's safe return to Earth. However, things turn bad when the Z Fighters sense Frieza heading towards Earth, along with another powerful being: his father, King Cold. Gohan and the Z Fighters regroup where Frieza and King Cold's spaceship is landing, at Northern Wastelands, but without Goku's help, the Earth appears to be doomed.

However, when Frieza and King Cold land on Earth, they are confronted by a mysterious youth, who transforms into a Super Saiyan and easily destroys Frieza and King Cold along with their henchmen. After the fight, he tells the others to follow him to when and where Goku will be arriving. After waiting two hours (three in the manga), Goku arrives on Earth and he and the youth have a private talk.

The mysterious youth reveals himself as Trunks, the son of Bulma and Vegeta from 20 years in the future, who has traveled from the future and explained that a pair of deadly Androids will appear and threaten the Earth in the next three years. Future Trunks then gives Goku an antidote for the heart disease he will soon contract. With the conversation over, Future Trunks departs to his future, but promises to meet them again when the Androids arrive. During the next three years, Gohan trains hard with Goku and Piccolo to prepare for the Android threat.

Three years later, the Z Fighters locate the Androids on an island nine miles southwest of South City. However, not wanting to fight in the city in fear of causing more damage after Gero had already destroyed half of the city, they fly to a wasteland so they can fight. Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan form and dominates Android 19, until the Saiyan contracts the heart virus Future Trunks warned him about three years prior, allowing Android 19 to gain the upper hand and steals some of Goku's energy. Goku, however, is saved by the arrival of Vegeta, who transforms into a Super Saiyan himself and easily destroys Android 19 while the Z Fighters watch in amazement.

With Android 19 destroyed, Android 20 (a.k.a. Dr. Gero) becomes scared and retreats, with the Z Fighters in pursuit. During the search, Piccolo is suddenly ambushed by Android 20, who attempts to steal the Namekian's energy and use it against Vegeta. Luckily, Piccolo telepathically contacts Gohan and tells him to come help him. Gohan soon arrives and knocks Dr. Gero down to the ground, saving Piccolo's life as the Z Fighters gather around. Piccolo then fights Android 20 alone and dominates the android with the strength he achieved from the last three years of intense training, cutting off one of Gero's hands. Future Trunks then comes back from the future and arrives on the battle field with the Z Fighters, only to discover that these Androids are not the ones in his future timeline. However, Android 20 manages to escape and the Z Fighters search for him while Gohan flies Bulma, Trunks, and Yajirobe back home to Capsule Corporation. Dr. Gero makes it back to his lab and activates two of his more powerful creations, Android 17 and Android 18. However, the Androids rebel and kill Dr. Gero and proceeded to activate another android, Android 16, whose sole purpose is to kill Goku. The Z Fighters battle the new Androids, only to be badly beaten as the Androids fly away to find and kill Goku.

When the Z Fighters are in an airplane with a weakened Goku, flying away from the Androids, Gohan and Future Trunks leave and meet with Bulma to investigate an old time machine that was used to travel to the past. The time machine is covered in moss and has a large hole at the top. In there, they find a large egg shell split in half, but can not get any conclusions from it. Then, Gohan finds some thing unusual in the distance: the skin of a huge bug (later known as the android, Cell). Bulma takes the shell with her to do some more investigating.

After Goku is cured from the heart virus, he takes Gohan, Future Trunks, and Vegeta up at Kami's Lookout, where they are shown by Mr. Popo a special room up at Kami's Lookout, known as the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, in preparation for a new threat: Cell. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Future Trunks and Vegeta both enter the room first for the whole day while Goku and Gohan wait and sense that Piccolo (now fused with Kami and returned to the original nameless Namekian) is fighting against the Androids. Gohan tries to go down to Earth and help Piccolo, but Goku does not let him go and explains he is not strong enough and will only get in Piccolo's way. Goku tells Gohan as soon as they get their training done, they will go down to Earth and help Piccolo.

Later, when Piccolo was nearly killed by a powered-up Imperfect Cell, who arrived on the battle field between Piccolo and Android 17, Goku and Gohan sense Piccolo's energy disappear. Believing his mentor to be dead, an enraged Gohan tries to go down to Earth, but is held and calmed down by Goku. Still angered, Gohan flies up into the air and tries to escape from the Lookout, but is punched down to the ground by Goku. As Mr. Popo rushes to help him, he explains to Gohan that Goku is hurting inside too and is even more angry than Gohan about Piccolo's near death. Gohan and Goku apologize to each other for their actions, and Goku promises that he will not let Piccolo's sacrifice be in vain.

After Cell absorbs Android 17 and achieved his Semi-Perfect form, he is about to set his sights on Android 18 when Tien Shinhan arrives and attacks Cell with his Neo Tri-Beam, allowing Android 18 and Android 16 (who was injured by Semi-Perfect Cell) to escape. Goku and Gohan sense Tien's energy decreasing and he finally collapses from exhaustion. Just before Semi-Perfect Cell can kill Tien, Goku uses Instant Transmission to appear on the battle field. He grabs the barely alive Tien and Piccolo and teleports back to the Lookout, where they are fully healed with a Senzu Bean. Piccolo explains that despite their best efforts against Semi-Perfect Cell, they proved useless.

At that moment, Mr. Popo interrupts and brings the group to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Future Trunks and Vegeta emerge stronger than ever. They are given new Saiyan armor by Bulma (who by this time already arrived) and fly down to the Earth to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. While Vegeta and Future Trunks fight Semi-Perfect Cell, Goku and Gohan enter and train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber while wearing some new Saiyan armor made by Bulma. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan struggles to transform into a Super Saiyan. Goku informs him that to become a Super Saiyan, it must come in response to a need, not a desire. Gohan realizes the only way to become a Super Saiyan is for his father to fight him at full power. Hesitantly, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and fires a powerful Kamehameha at Gohan. Gohan blocks the attack and thinks about all the other times he was not able to help his friends whenever they were in danger while his friends helped him out if he was in danger. Thinking about this, Gohan becomes overwhelmed with rage, allowing him to transform into a Super Saiyan and fire the Kamehameha back at Goku, who dodges the attack and tells his son to focus his energy, making him return to his base form. Goku tells Gohan they can take a break and even gives his son a haircut.

Later, Gohan again transforms into his Super Saiyan form and trains while Goku sits down and watches his son's training in his Super Saiyan form improve. Gohan gets tired and transforms back into his base form when Goku demonstrates the Ascended and Ultra Super Saiyan forms (which are the forms that Vegeta and Future Trunks are using against Cell, who by this time had achieved his perfect form by absorbing Android 18).

Seeing this incredible strength and power, Gohan is sure Goku can beat Cell, but Goku says he can not. He explains that because his muscles are now bulky, they slow down his speed, which is obviously important in the fight with Cell. Goku tells Gohan that transforming into a Super Saiyan takes a great deal of energy, but they need all the Super Saiyan energy they can get. Goku comes up with a plan to transform into a Full-Power Super Saiyan, so he tells Gohan to try and stay transformed as a Super Saiyan for the whole day when it starts to feel normal.

At some point during their training, Goku prepared to call it a day, but then Gohan then manages to surprise Goku by transforming into an unprecedented Super Saiyan form before collapsing from exhaustion. Although Gohan does not remember it due to the strain of this initial transformation, it ended up being the catalyst that caused Goku to realize that, should Cell achieve his perfect form, Gohan is the only one of the Z-Fighters, including Goku himself, who would stand any chance at defeating Cell in even that state.

Cell Games arc

"What are you so afraid of, Cell? Isn't this what you wanted? I warned you. I told you what would happen if you pushed me too far. But you didn't listen. You forced me to awaken my hidden power, and now that you've seen it, you're afraid... because you know that I'm going to destroy you."
— Gohan during his battle with Cell (English Version)

With their training finally completed, Gohan and Goku emerge from the Hyperbolic Time

Chamber as Full-Power Super Saiyans. As Goku and Gohan are eating food made by Mr. Popo, Trunks, after being defeated by Perfect Cell along with Vegeta tells them that Perfect Cell is hosting a tournament for the Earth's strongest warriors called the Cell Games, to which Goku thinks of it as an interesting challenge. While Goku wears his trademark orange and blue clothes for the tournament, Gohan asks Piccolo for a copy of his uniform, since he was his first mentor. Piccolo conjures up a uniform similar to his for Gohan, who happily appreciates the new outfit.

Goku pays Perfect Cell a visit using Instant Transmission, and after returning, he claims he is no match for the android. Piccolo suggests they can still go in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for extra training. However, Goku declines and says that he and Gohan can train outside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, greatly surprising everyone. Goku and Gohan leave the Lookout, (after Goku and Gohan show Korin and Yajirobe their new power) and arrive at the Kame House to pick up Chi-Chi so they can go home. Gohan asks his father if they have a chance of beating Cell if they spend the next nine days resting and training outside. Goku laughs and says they do not have to worry about it now, since they have nine days to relax. Gohan and Goku go inside and meet everyone else. At one point, Oolong and Puar even say that Gohan has, "buffed up." However, when Chi-Chi sees Goku and Gohan, she freaks out and exclaims that Gohan has become a hair-dyeing punk.

In a filler episode, Gohan flies to a village called Chazke Village to run a shopping errand for his mother. He meets Lime and Mr. Lao there, and later encounters one of his father's deadliest enemies in his childhood: Mercenary Tao, rebuilt as a cyborg. Taken over by panic and shock at discovering Gohan is Goku's son, Mercenary Tao flies away on a tree. Goku arrives and he and Gohan are given the groceries by Mr. Lao, who encourages them that they can defeat Cell. Gohan and Goku say their goodbyes to Mr. Lao and Lime and fly back home.

In another filler, Gohan has his 11th birthday and all of his other memories are revealed. One of his memories include Goku, Chi-Chi, and the Ox King discussing a name for their newborn son. However, when they mention Grandpa Son Gohan, Goku's dead adopted grandfather, they discover the baby laughs at the name, "Gohan." Seeing as the baby likes the name, "Gohan", Goku, Chi-Chi, and Ox-King name the baby, "Gohan." In another flashback Goku, Chi-Chi, and Gohan are walking in the woods when they look up in a tree at a bird family. However, Goku accidentally lets go of Gohan's stroller, causing Gohan to zoom violently down the hill while Goku and Chi-Chi run for their lives after their crying son. The stroller jumps over a ravine and heads for a tree where it crashes and breaks. The crying Gohan is about to smash into the tree, but he stops crying and uses his hidden power to smash through the tree without injury. Goku catches Gohan on the other side of the tree and he laughs, ending the flashback.

Gohan, Goku, and Kuririn return home, where they, along with Chi-Chi and Ox-King, celebrate Gohan's 11th birthday. Before he blows out the candles, Gohan makes a wish in his mind. He wishes he would have enough strength to defeat Cell so his family would live in peace. However, when Gohan blows out the candles, he accidentally ends up blowing the cake everywhere on everybody's face. Chi-Chi says a boy would get severely punished for trashing his birthday cake. However, Chi-Chi's mood changes to happy and she says he can not help it because he is Goku's son, to which everyone joyfully laughs.

Finally, ten days have passed and the Z Fighters arrive at the Cell Games for the battle against Perfect Cell. Goku is the first Z Fighter to battle against Perfect Cell and matches the monster blow for blow. To everyone's surprise, Goku forfeits the battle against Perfect Cell after using the Instant Kamehameha (a combination of the Instant Transmission and Kamehameha) which left him and Cell drained. Goku then chooses Gohan to fight Perfect Cell in his place. Gohan states Goku and Cell's battle was not hard to keep up with, leading to the conclusion that Gohan was possibly stronger than Goku, who was fighting at full power.

Gohan powers up to the point where his power exceeds even Goku's and reluctantly fights Perfect Cell. As the battle occurs, Gohan does not have the same fighting spirit as his father, allowing Perfect Cell to gain the upper hand. Gohan tells Cell that once he becomes enraged, his hidden power is unleashed, referring to when he attacked Raditz, when he was in training with Piccolo, and when he was fighting Frieza. Gohan did not wish to see this power unleashed, much to Perfect Cell's chagrin. Believing he could see this hidden power, Perfect Cell began smacking Gohan around to get him angry. Gohan finally gets a little angry and kicks Perfect Cell in the face, giving him a bloody lip and fueling his desire to see Gohan's hidden power. When things start to get dangerous, Android 16 sneaks up behind Perfect Cell and gives him a bear hug, attempting to self-destruct and take the monster with him. However, Krillin reveals to Android 16 that Bulma and her father removed the self-destruct bomb, allowing Perfect Cell to break free and blast Android 16 to bits, much to the horror of the Z Fighters. However, the android's head is left still intact and rolls over to Mr. Satan and his gang, who were hiding and watching the fight.

Perfect Cell then creates seven Cell Juniors and has them attack the Z Fighters. Gohan watches in horror and becomes angry as his friends are mercilessly beaten by the Cell Jrs. Meanwhile, the head of Android 16 convinces Hercule to throw his head to where Gohan and Perfect Cell are so that he may help Gohan. Now in Gohan's sight, Android 16 tells Gohan to not be afraid of releasing his anger and that it was okay to fight if he wants to protect the people and world he loved. Finally, 16 said to Gohan to drop his restraints and let it go because he has enough power and strength to defeat Perfect Cell. With Android 16's final words, Perfect Cell crushes Android 16's head, ending the peaceful android's life. Touched by Android 16's final words and enraged by the peaceful android's death, Gohan's rage reaches its limits and transforms him into a new level, Super Saiyan 2.

Now in his new anger-fueled state, Gohan says to Perfect Cell stating that he will never forget what he has done. He approaches the android and quickly snatches the Senzu Beans that Perfect Cell stole from Krillin. Gohan disappears as Cell tries to grab them back and appears in front of a Cell Jr., showing new amounts of speed. The Cell Jr. attempts to strike Gohan, only to be easily killed by the enraged young Saiyan. Gohan moves so fast that it appears that he has teleported to where Krillin is held captive by two of the Cell Jrs., something that Future Trunks realizes about Gohan increasing his strength and power without losing speed. Gohan rescues Kuririn and kills another of the Cell Jrs. Seeing this new incredible power that Goku spoke of earlier, Perfect Cell orders all of the Cell Jrs. to take on Gohan all at once; however, Gohan easily kills all of Cell Jrs. without mercy, much to the amazement and shock of everyone, including Perfect Cell. After Gohan gives the Senzu Beans to Future Trunks to heal the Z Fighters, he proceeds to challenge Perfect Cell.

As the Z Fighters are healed by the Senzu Beans and get to a safe distance, Gohan battles Perfect Cell and gains the upper hand against the android. Perfect Cell unleashes his maximum power and punches Gohan hard in the face. However, Gohan is barely phased by Perfect Cell's blow and counterattacks with two powerful punches to the Perfect Cell's stomach and face, severely injuring the Android. Perfect Cell fires attacks used by some of the Z Fighters, including the Destructo Disk, Special Beam Cannon, and Scatter Shot at Gohan, who easily brushes through the attacks. Gohan tells Perfect Cell that he should not have pushed him and because of that, he is going to destroy him.

Perfect Cell flies up high into the air and fires a massive Kamehameha down at Gohan in an attempt to destroy the entire Earth. However, just as the huge energy beam is about to hit the Earth, Gohan counterattacks with a bigger and more powerful Kamehameha, overpowering Perfect Cell's Kamehameha and destroying the android's legs, left arm, and the two straight sections on top of his head. Goku yells for Gohan to finish off Cell before he regenerates, but Gohan, still enraged at Perfect Cell's actions, refuses and wants Cell to suffer before he kills him. As Son Goku predicted, the enraged Cell regenerates and transforms into his Power Weighted form but even with his enormous power, he is unable to hit Gohan, making the same mistake Future Trunks made ten days ago. After Gohan dodges Cell's punches, he delivered two powerful kicks to Perfect Cell's face and stomach, making him regurgitate Android 18 and transform back into his Semi-Perfect form.

In a fit of anger and desperation, Semi-Perfect Cell began a Self Destruction technique, planning to blow himself up along with the Earth. Gohan attempts to attack the self-destructing Semi-Perfect Cell, but the android replies that if he is hit, he will immediately explode. Hearing this, Gohan realizes that there is no way that he can save the Earth and blames himself for not finishing Cell off sooner. However, at the last second, Goku uses instant-transmission to transport in front of Semi-Perfect Cell. Goku tells Gohan how proud he is of his son for putting up a good fight and to look after Chi-Chi. After a heart-felt goodbye to his son, Goku transports Cell away from Earth to King Kai's Planet where Semi-Perfect Cell finally explodes, destroying the planet thus killing Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory in the process. Back on Earth, Gohan and the other Z Fighters mourn Goku's noble sacrifice. Realizing how cocky and arrogant he was, Gohan cries and blames himself for his father's death while Kuririn tries to comfort him. Kuririn reminds Gohan that Goku was proud of him, and that he loves him.

However unknown to the Z Fighters, Cell survives the explosion. As his first act of return, Super Perfect Cell kills Future Trunks with one blast in front of the shocked Z Fighters. Gohan was in fact pleased to see Super Perfect Cell had returned, hoping to defeat the android so he could avenge his father. Enraged by his son's death, Vegeta, in a fit of fury and rage, transformed into to a Super Saiyan and attacked Super Perfect Cell with a powerful barrage of energy blasts. However, as the dust clears, Super Perfect Cell, emerges from the blast, unharmed, and smacks Vegeta aside to the ground and fires a powerful blast at the Saiyan prince. Gohan jumps in front of the unconscious Vegeta and takes the full-force of Super Perfect Cell's attack, costing him the use of his left arm and most of his power drained.

Wanting to end the conflict, Super Perfect Cell prepares a massive Kamehameha to destroy Gohan, who loses all hope after having his left arm broken and seeing how much more powerful Super Perfect Cell is now. However, at that moment, Goku telepathically contacted Gohan with the help of King Kai encouraged Gohan to believe in his power. When Gohan tells Goku it was all his fault that this happened, Goku reminds him that not only do things like this happen, but if anyone's to blame for it, it's Super Perfect Cell. With new found hope and confidence, Gohan prepares a one-handed Kamehameha with the assistance from Goku's spirit. With their attacks finally charged and ready, Gohan and Super Perfect Cell fire their Kamehameha attacks at each other, resulting in a huge Beam Struggle that knocks away everyone else.

During the Kamehameha duel between Gohan and Super Perfect Cell, Super Perfect Cell has the

upper hand against Gohan. However, Gohan, still aided by his father in Other World, is able to charge more of his power into his Kamehameha, seemingly bringing the energy duel to a standstill. Piccolo, Kurirn, Tien and Yamcha, except for Vegeta, helped Gohan out by blasting Super Perfect Cell, who retaliates by knocking all of them away with his energy, rendering them unable to help Gohan. However, just as Super Perfect Cell is about to destroy Gohan, Vegeta, after regaining his confidence, aims at Super Perfect Cell's head with a small Big Bang Attack, distracting the android. Seeing this opportunity, Gohan (encouraged by Goku) unleashes all the rest of his power into his Kamehameha, completely destroying every cell in Super Perfect Cell's body, dispatching the android once and for all. Having successfully won, Gohan reverts to his normal state and collapses to the ground, breathing heavily and smiling as Goku in Other World expresses how proud he is of his son for finally defeating Super Perfect Cell and saving the world.

Following Super Perfect Cell's defeat, the Z Fighters and Gohan return to Dende's Lookout, where he is healed by Dende. Yamcha tells 18 from a far away distance that Gohan defeated Cell. Then Gohan reveals to everyone that Kuririn is in love with Android 18, this shock Yamcha and Tien overall. After 18 assumedly leaves, Yamcha makes the wish to resurrect everyone killed by Cell. However, Goku does not come back and telepathically contacts the Z Fighters on the Lookout. Goku tells them not to revive him and explains that he seemed to attract evil villains that were after him, so the Earth would be safer if he was not there. He also said that Gohan had greatly surpassed him and if there were any other threats, Gohan would be there to defend the Earth. Yamcha remarks that Goku has being cheerful since he was a little, Yamcha along Tien, Piccolo and Gohan reveal their favorite memory of Goku. Which is reveal in a flashback.

When the group has difficulty thinking of a second wish, Yamcha jokingly contemplates asking Shenron for an expensive diamond necklace for the girl his going out with. He then hears Kuririn asking Shenron to remove the bombs from inside Android 17 and 18's body. This is successful, with Kuririn finally admitting to the others that he truly loves 18 . But everyone thinks that 17 is 18's boy friend, then she reveals her self to the others and corrects them when she angrily tells them that 17 is her twin brother. This surprises everyone, and after 18 leaves. Yamcha tells Kuririn that 18 is in to you, and Kuririn asks Yamcha If he is sure. With the newly recreated Dragon Balls, they summon Shenron and wish for all of Cell's victims to be revived.

Yamcha admits this, and tells Kuririn that he'll help him when It comes to romance since Goku helped him with Martial Arts. Tien then tells everyone that Goku doesn't want them to be sad, since he taught them not to hold back on their emotions. Tien then leaves after telling Gohan to take very good care of Chi-Chi for Goku, with Gohan and Yamcha saying goodbye to Tien. Then Yamcha, Gohan, Kuririn and Future Trunks leave Kami's Lookout, to go there separate ways. The next day, Yamcha and the rest of the group see Future Trunks off as he leaves to return to his own timeline. A month after the Cell Games ended, Gohan sneaks out with his grandfather to go fishing.

Great Saiyaman arc

"Guardian of the city, I am the one and only... Great Saiyaman!"
— Gohan displaying his new Great Saiyaman alter ego to some crooks (English Version)

Seven years after the events of the Cell Games, Gohan lives at home with his mother and his seven year old brother named Goten, born just after the Cell Games. His training has taken a backseat to his studies and his strength has decreased overtime, although he can still compete with Goku and Vegeta, who have trained hard in those years. Chi-Chi decides Gohan needs to attend high school in order to pursue higher education, so she sends him to Orange Star High School in Satan City. Chi-Chi decides Gohan needs to attend high school to finish his education. On his first day in the city, he turns Super Saiyan (in order to conceal his identity) to stop a robbery, and by the time he arrives at Orange Star High tales of the newest hero, "Gold Fighter", have already spread (which name was actually given to him after two previous incidents while going to the school to take entrance exams). In class, he meets another crime-fighter and the most popular girl in school, Videl. She is the daughter of Mr. Satan, who got rich and famous for stealing Gohan's credit over the defeat of Cell. While at school, Gohan also had to be careful not to reveal his true power.

Videl is highly suspicious of Gohan and spies on him to see if he is really the Gold Fighter. Videl confronts Gohan several times to voice her suspicions, but Gohan nervously denies them. Gohan decides to use a disguise when fighting crime and goes to Bulma to make him a costume. He becomes the Great Saiyaman to hide his identity so that the media will not bother his family. However, while trying to convince Videl to let him return a stolen pterodactyl baby to its two pterodactyl parents, he accidentally reveals his identity to Videl, who then blackmails Gohan to compete against her in the newly revived World Martial Arts Tournament in exchange for her silence. Gohan, having no experience with kids his own age, especially girls, is helpless against the confident Videl, who makes him promise to teach her how to fly.

When Gohan tells Bulma about the tournament, Goku, listening in from the Other World, contacts them and tells them he'll compete too, using his one-day pass to the human world. Hearing this, Vegeta also decides to compete. To make it more interesting, and to give them a chance to meet Goku again, Gohan tells all his friends about the tournament, and they all decide to compete. While Gohan trains with Goten, he is shocked to see Goten transform into a Super Saiyan, breaking his record as the youngest Super Saiyan ever, worrying that if he does not train harder, Goten will surpass him.

When Videl shows up at Gohan's home to learn to fly, Gohan learns that she has no knowledge of energy, since her father believes it to be just a trick. Gohan begins training her from scratch, though she picks it up pretty quickly. During his training of Videl as well as his brother Goten, Videl learns more about Gohan and grows closer to him. Also when teaching Videl becomes a great flyer, Gohan had thought that Videl was really something special. Despite the relentless teasing from friends (such as Krillin), Videl and Gohan develop a sweet kind of relationship.

The World Tournament arc

"Last chance for requests! Do you just want to see just a Super Saiyan? Or should I take it up to the next level!?"
— Gohan confronting Kibito at the World Martial Arts Tournament (English Version)

As the Z Fighters arrive at the World Tournament, Goku, who had been in Other World training for the last seven years, arrives on Earth and after an emotional greeting by Gohan, meets his second son, Goten. As the tournament occurs, the Z Fighters easily brush through their matches. Later, however, when Videl fights Spopovich, she is nearly beaten to death by the large brute. Gohan watches in anger as his friend horribly suffers at the hands of the ruthless Spopovich. Finally, having seen enough, Gohan turns Super Saiyan 2 and tries to save Videl from Spopovich, but before he can, Yamu interrupts and tells for Spopovich to finish the match because they have much more important things in the matter. Spopovich kicks Videl out of the ring and leaves with Yamu, but not before being told by the angry Gohan that he will win the next time they fight.

After rushing Videl to the hospital and giving her a Senzu Bean to heal, Gohan returned to the tournament and found himself set up to fight Kibito. In order for the Supreme Kai and Kibito to find Babidi's spaceship, they are forced into tricking Gohan into turning into a Super Saiyan. However, Gohan states that there is a level beyond a Super Saiyan and transforms into his Super Saiyan 2 form, shocking the audience into thinking that he was the mysterious Gold Fighter. At that moment, Yamu and Spopovich jump into the ring and Supreme Kai paralyzes Gohan when he is about to attack. Yamu and Spopovich steal Gohan's energy, reverting him back to his normal state, and fly off, with Supreme Kai and the other Z Fighters in pursuit. Kibito heals Gohan, restoring his energy and explains they are going after Spopovich and Yamu to find Babidi's spaceship. Gohan and Kibito, along with Videl, fly away to meet up with the Z Fighters.

Majin Buu arc

"Come on, Dabura! Show your true power, you can't win at this rate!"
— Gohan during his battle against Dabura

After flying for a time, Videl gets tired and decides to head back to the World Tournament, seeing as the opponent they are going to face is too powerful for her. However, before leaving, she and Gohan have a conversation about the identity of the Gold Fighter, who is actually Gohan. Figuring this out, Videl comes to the conclusion that seven years ago during the Cell Games, Gohan was the golden-haired boy who had defeated Super Perfect Cell, not Hercule. Gohan and Videl say goodbye to each other and Videl promises that she is not through with him yet, indicating that she has fallen for him.

Gohan and Kibito later catch up with the Supreme Kai and the Z Fighters at Babidi's spaceship. They hide and secretly watch as Yamu and Spopovich give the energy to the evil wizard Babidi, who retaliates by killing them. Dabura and Babidi realize the Z Fighters are nearby and decide to steal their energy by killing the weaker fighters and luring them into the spaceship. Dabura flies up to the Z Fighters and kills Kibito with a Evil Impulse blast at point blank range. After a brief fight, Dabura spits on Krillin and Piccolo, turning them to stone, and flies back to the spaceship, with Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and a reluctant Supreme Kai following behind.

When they get inside the spaceship, they are told they must defeat the three fighters if they want to destroy Babidi. The first fighter, Pui Pui, appears and fights against Vegeta, only to be easily killed when the Saiyan prince fires a powerful energy blast on Pui Pui's chest. Goku is the next to fight against Yakon, the second fighter, who has the ability to absorb energy. However, Goku manages to kill him by making him absorb too much of his energy, causing Yakon to explode. With the two fighters defeated, Gohan fights against the last and strongest of Babidi's fighters, Dabura in a mountain area. At first, Gohan is fighting a little rusty against Dabura due to not training during the seven years after the Cell Games, but after transforming into his Super Saiyan 2 form, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the Demon King. However, it is revealed by Goku and Vegeta that Gohan had a lot more power when he faced Cell seven years earlier. Vegeta becomes disgraced with Gohan's lack of motivation and expresses his frustration, believing Gohan to have peaked in power. Dabura notices Vegeta's inside evilness and stops the fight with Gohan to report his findings to Babidi.

Soon after the fight, Vegeta's mind is taken over Babidi's magic, transforming him into Majin Vegeta thus releasing the evil in his heart. Babidi transports them to the World Tournament arena, where Majin Vegeta destroys parts of the stadium, killing many people to convince Goku to fight him. Goku agrees and they are transported to a desert area. Before leaving with Supreme Kai to stop Babidi, Gohan is given a Senzu Bean by Goku, who tells him to remember about the people he is fighting for and how much he cares about them and let that be his weapon. Gohan says goodbye to Goku as he and Supreme Kai head down Babidi's spaceship to confront the evil wizard, while Goku and Majin Vegeta fight their intense battle.

After easily defeating many weak henchmen, Gohan and Supreme Kai make it to the bottom of the ship where the Sealed Ball containing Majin Buu is. Babidi and Dabura appear and prepare to release the Majin from the ball. Supreme Kai orders Gohan to retreat and wait for the others to think of a way to defeat Majin Buu, but Gohan, remembering his father's words, refuses and says he needs to protect the people he cares about. Gohan powers up and fires an Electric Kamehameha one after another attempting to destroy the cocoon and Majin Buu along with it, but the cocoon is unaffected. The cocoon finally stops steaming and hatches, but nothing is inside. However, only Gohan knows that something did come out of the cocoon, and it was forming something up into the sky. The steam that erupted from the cocoon forms into a pink, fat creature: Majin Buu.

Despite his best efforts to protect Supreme Kai from Majin Buu, Gohan is left nearly killed after Majin Buu fires a devastating attack that blasts him up into the sky. The weakened Supreme Kai uses his psychic powers to destroy the attack and Gohan ends up falling down into a nearby forest, unconscious and severely beaten. Fortunately, when Kibito is brought back to life by the Dragon Balls he locates and heals the Supreme Kai. They eventually find Gohan in the forest and bring him to the Supreme Kai Planet to be healed. After being revived, Gohan is then told he was brought to the Kai Planet to pull out the legendary Z Sword to defeat Majin Buu. At first, Gohan has trouble pulling the Z Sword out, but after transforming into a Super Saiyan 2, he manages to pull it out.

During his training with the Z Sword, Gohan reunites with his father Goku, who has returned from Earth where he transformed into Super Saiyan 3 to fight Majin Buu. Goku is surprised to see that his son is still alive and discovers Supreme Kai was behind this. Seeing Gohan's excellent progress with the Z Sword, Goku decides to test its strength by throwing a huge boulder, which Gohan easily slices in half. Supreme Kai summons Katchin, the densest metal in the universe, to test if Gohan can slice through it. However, when Goku throws the Katchin at Gohan, the Z Sword snaps in two and from the broken sword emerges Old Kai, who tells them that he will fully unlock Gohan's latent potential in a ritual.

Fusion Dance arc

"Fight you? No, I wanna kill you."
— Gohan confronting Super Buu
Gohan.Ep

Gohan with his new unlocked powers prepares to fight Super Buu

As Goku, Supreme Kai, and Kibito observe what is happening down on Earth, Gohan grows increasingly impatient as Old Kai reads and laughs at comics instead of unlocking his power. Gohan soon loses his patience and angrily powers up, displaying an amazing power that illuminates the Supreme Kai planet. However, amazed at realizing that some of his power really was unlocked, Gohan apologizes to Old Kai, and resumes the ritual. After some time, the ritual is finally completed and Gohan is told to power up like he does for the Super Saiyan transformation; however, when he does, his appearance does not change, but his power and strength gain an awesome increase. Gohan says goodbye to Supreme Kai, Old Kai, and his father Goku and is transported back to Earth by Kibito. Before Kibito transports back to the Supreme Kai planet, Gohan asks for the clothes reminiscent of his father's, to which Kibito happily complies. Kibito wishes Gohan good luck and transports back to the Supreme Kai planet. With his power finally released and the fate of the world now in his hands, Gohan flies off to confront the new Majin Buu: Super Buu.

Gohan arrives on the battlefield where he finds Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo, who reveal that all of their friends and family were killed and eaten by Super Buu. Gohan is angry about this at first, but thinks he can still sense Dende's energy. Gohan powers up and completely outclasses Super Buu, much to the shock of Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. No matter how much he tries, Super Buu is unable to land any damage on Gohan, who easily dodges and blocks all of the monster's strongest attacks. In an act of desperation, Super Buu attempts to self-destruct and take Gohan with him, but Gohan sees through this and grabs and flies away with Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks before they are all caught in the explosion.

After getting to a safe distance, Gohan explains to Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo how he had become very powerful through Old Kai's magic ritual. Gohan and the others sense Dende's faint energy and decide to fly after him before Super Buu does. Along the way, they meet up and rescue an exhausted Mr. Satan and his adopted dog, Bee, who were strolling around in the desert. They finally locate Dende, who explains to them that he was thrown off of the Lookout by Mr. Popo before he could be hit by Super Buu's Chocolate Beam. After the hour is up, Super Buu arrives and challenges Goten and Trunks to fight him again for a rematch, which the boys agree on and fuse into Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. At that moment, however, Super Buu absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, resulting in a massive increase of mental and physical strength.

As the battle begins, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the new Super Buu until Buu soon reveals that he was holding back. Buu begins thrashing Gohan, all the while using Piccolo's intelligence to play mind tricks on Gohan. When he remarks that Dende is healing Gohan's injuries, Buu attacks Dende. Tien Shinhan soon joins the fight, saving Dende and Mr. Satan, but Super Buu quickly defeats him with one kick and prepares an attack capable of destroying the entire Earth. At the last second, however, Goku (after receiving Potara Earrings from Old Kai) appears and slices Super Buu in half. Goku throws one earring to Gohan, but he misses and Goku is forced to transform into his Super Saiyan 3 form to stall Super Buu, while Gohan searches for the earring. He manages to find the earring, but since Gotenks defused inside of Super Buu, which caused his power to decrease, Goku says there is no need for Potara Fusion, seeing as they can easily beat Super Buu now. However, Super Buu manages to absorb Gohan while he is caught off-guard, giving him a massive power increase.

Kid Buu & Uub arc

DragonballZ-Episode287 178

Gohan with his whole family.

Later, Goku and Vegeta (who had fused into Vegito to dominate Super Buu) enter Super Buu's body and escape with Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. However, this causes Super Buu to undergo a final transformation into his original form – Kid Buu. Gohan is killed when Kid Buu destroys the Earth, but he is soon revived along with the Earth and everyone else by Porunga. When they learn from Vegeta that Goku needs energy for his Super Spirit Bomb, they contribute part of their energy to the Spirit Bomb, but the citizens of Earth do not. However, after Hercule convinces the people to donate their energy, the Super Spirit Bomb is completed, and Goku obliterates Kid Buu once and for all.

Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Piccolo sense that Kid Buu is dead. Mr. Satan informs everybody on Earth that Kid Buu is gone for good. Everybody cheers. Everybody on Kami's Lookout is happy. When Goku arrives, Chi-Chi, Gohan, and Goten run towards him. When Vegeta comes, Bulma and Trunks go to him. Videl is happy to see Mr. Satan, her dad, but everybody is scared out of their wits to see Majin Buu. Trunks prepares to launch an attack, but Vegeta stops him and says that Majin Buu is their 'guest'. Goku then apologizes to everyone for being gone for so long, and says that he is alive again because Old Kai brought him back to life. Overjoyed by hearing this, Chi-Chi asks if this means that she, Goku, Gohan, and Goten can live as a family of four, and when Goku says yes, she breaks down in tears and hugs Goku, who then comforts her and tells Chi-Chi that he loves her.

At Mount Paozu, Goku, Goten, and Trunks, are playing outside in a hot tub, completely naked, while Chi-Chi is cooking inside the house, reassuring herself that everything is back to normal. To try and get revenge on Goku for dunking them underwater, Goten and Trunks perform the Fusion Dance. After a brief battle underwater, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, destroying the tub. Goku and Gotenks are then exposed totally nude in the cold air, Goku standing with his naked butt shown to his friends at the back and Gotenks sitting on the grass embarrassed and awed at Goku's naked Super Saiyan transformation.

This makes everyone laugh, and then Chi-Chi comes out of the house so mad that she threatens to give Gotenks a spank, something Goku warned them about, with Goku also suggesting that they remain fused so they would not have to endure a spank each. At the end of the episode, Chi-Chi chases Gotenks running around Goku while the rest of the crowd is laughing in shame.

Goku must do his best to guard the fragile eggs not knowing that he will soon face another danger, an angry Chi-Chi. She indeed becomes angry upon hearing from Gohan and Goten that he has run off again. Chi-Chi decides to get past her anger so they can enjoy the party.

Once they get to the party, everybody begins to show up, including, Dende, Mr. Satan, and Majin Buu. Everyone seems to be enjoying the food, music, and each other's company until Goku is mentioned. Right then, the party comes to a halt, and everyone's face is downcast. They realize that the party just is not as good as it could have been if Goku was there. Meanwhile, Goku braves many dangers and keeps the pterosaur eggs safe until they hatch.

Goku remembers the party right afterward, and he gets there just as the party is coming to an end. While initially angry at Goku, Chi-Chi and Bulma get all the food and party supplies back out, because they feel Goku should get to participate in the party as well. At the end of the episode, everyone is sitting, listening to Goku tell about the eggs and how great it was to see the new baby pterosaur be born.

The episode ends with Goku and everybody else spending time together and listening to Goku's story.

Ten years later, Gohan has finally become a scholar, married Videl and had a daughter named Pan. At the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku participates and fights Uub, the reincarnation of Kid Buu. After an equal battle, Goku takes in Uub as his student to train him and better control his power. Goku intervenes before Beerus can destroy the Earth and in the group summoning Shenron, they learn how to create a Super Saiyan God, Gohan joining the other Saiyans in holding hands in an attempt to make Goku into one. When this fails, Beerus tries to destroy Earth again, aiming directly at them prior to Videl intervening despite Gohan attempting to convince her otherwise. After Videl reveals that she is pregnant, Gohan is excited to become a father and arguing to his father that her joining them is their only hope when he ponders if the womb will be enough.

Resurrection F arc

Gohan is cooking for Videl but it turns into a fiasco. Six months later, Gohan's first child has been born and is named Pan. Gohan finally became the scholar he wanted to be. One time, Gohan returned home and wanted to play with Pan as his alter ego Great Saiyaman but Mr. Satan wanted to play too. They both began tossing Pan around until Chi-Chi interrupted and began yelling at them. Gohan along with Mr. Satan wanted Pan to be a martial artist but she did not want another warrior in the family.

Gohan notices that Goku is trying to leave and go with Whis and train so he tells his mother to try to prevent him from going. When Goku is about to leave, Gohan shows up with Chi-Chi and Goten with him and Gohan argues that Goku needs to train and grow stronger in order to protect the Earth, but Chi-Chi didn't budge to that and was eventually relieved when Chi-Chi abruptly gave into Goku's wishes after he leaves as she knows that he will return when he gets hungry.

Gohan returns home with Videl. They have Piccolo babysit Pan when they're away. By the time of Frieza's revival, Gohan shows up and notices that Piccolo is worried. Piccolo senses power that he can't explain, then Gohan notices it too. Four months later, when Gohan and Piccolo heard news of Frieza's return, they join Master Roshi, Krillin, and Tien Shinhan in the fight against him and his army of 1,000 soldiers.

Gohan tells everyone that Goten and Trunks will not show up due to Bulma's request and they would do something reckless. When Kuririn wondered if Buu was going to show up, Gohan says that he won't because he fell asleep and it'll be hard waking him up. Master Roshi asks if Gohan has kept up with his training, he declines but says that he can probably go Super Saiyan. Gohan takes on Frieza's army along with Piccolo, Kuririn, Tien, Jaco, and Master Roshi.

Gohan challenges Shisami when he approaches. Gohan shoots a barrage of ki blasts while he gets charged at by Shisami then gets caught in a Bear Hug. Gohan isn't struggling while being in the possession of Shisami. He tells him that he has a child and that when a person like him disturbs the peace, he needs to protect them. Before Gohan could attack Shisami, Tagoma shoots a ki blast at them and kills Shisami and critically injures Gohan. Gohan's heart stops beating so Piccolo restarts it by blasting a kiai and was given a Senzu Bean by Kuririn.

Tagoma is taken on by Piccolo but when he's in need, Gohan helps Piccolo by shooting a blast at Tagoma to get him away. However, Gohan's blast doesn't hurt Tagoma as his body has endured the pain and suffering from Frieza, making his body steel-like. Gotenks comes out of nowhere and charges Tagoma and hits him in his crotch. Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Tagoma and takes on the Z Fighters with his immense power. They are easily beat by Ginyu with just single punches to everyone. Gohan takes on Captain Ginyu after he switches bodies with Tagoma. Gohan is struggling to fight against Captain Ginyu because he hasn't been training to maintain his power. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and beats Ginyu in several hits but spares him.

Frieza gets furious because Gohan transformed into a Super Saiyan and sparing Ginyu, reminding him of when Goku spared him on Namek and thought it would be fun to torture him to make Goku mad. Gohan is shot numerous times through the arms, legs, stomach and chest with Death Beams, leaving him on the ground, nearly dead. As the fatal Death Beam Frieza shot at Gohan, Piccolo gets in front of the beam and takes it for Gohan, once again dying for him. Devastated, Gohan expresses regret for not training and not even having the power to protect Piccolo and his family, with Kuririn comforting Gohan and assuring him that him stop fighting to be with his family is not a bad thing.

While Frieza taunts and threatens to also kill Videl and Pan, Gohan vows to stop him at all cost, causing him to power up to his fullest. At this time Bulma manages to contact Whis and inform them of what is happening so Whis gathers Beerus, Goku and Vegeta and attempt to find Earth for Goku however Goku can't sense anyone so Whis shows him a picture of Gohan to assist.

Gohan's rage is building and he stands back up ready to fight Frieza and begins to power up with what little energy he has left. Krillin, Master Roshi, Tien, Goten and Trunks attempt to calm Gohan down saying Goku and Vegeta will be here in a moment but he isn't listening and powers up further. Beerus commends Gohan for being able to put out so much power not knowing he had it in him and says Goku surely has to sense him by now however he isn't, with Vegeta getting annoyed at Goku for not being able to sense Gohan yet. Gohan's rage blows and he powers up to Super Saiyan not only turning the sky black but putting out more than enough power for Goku and Vegeta to sense.

Gohan's body however is too injured to go on and his body breaks, dropping him out of Super Saiyan, leaving him dazed and powerless. Frieza laughs and fires a Death Beam at his head however Goku and Vegeta arrive and block the attack for Gohan and Goku catches Gohan. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being able to save Piccolo and being too weak, however Goku and Vegeta commend him for putting out so much power that they were able to sense him all the way from Beerus's planet and they are proud of him for standing up to the newly empowered Frieza for so long on his own. Goku gives Gohan to Kuririn, who brings him back with a Senzu bean. Gohan retreats with Kuririn, leaving the battle to Goku.

He then watches the fight between Goku and Frieza and later Vegeta who steps in after Goku is taken out. After Frieza destroys the Earth, Gohan gets protected by Whis, along with the others. Whis undoes time for Goku to able to kill Frieza and send him back to Earth's Hell. After that, Gohan heads back home to see that Videl and Pan are okay then he embraces them and promises to protect them at all costs. He is later seen at a party, with the other Z fighters who participated in the fight and talks to Piccolo as he realized he needs to train and asks Piccolo if he could do so and Piccolo accepts this and tells him to maintain his body first.

Universe 6 arc

Sometime after the encounter with Golden Frieza, Gohan has been training with Piccolo in order to regain his lost power. During the training, Piccolo has grown considerably stronger and has become equal to or even surpassed Gohan. One day while they are training, Goku and Vegeta show up to recruit Piccolo to a team for the Universe 6 and 7 Gods of Destruction Selection Martial Arts Competition, but Gohan insists that he should take his place because he wants to show off his new found power. However, after hearing from Goku that the tournament is in four days, Gohan is disappointed because he has to attend an important conference for Videl's benefit and thus, he cannot participate in the tournament.

Potaufeu arc

A few days after the tournament ends, Goku suffers from "Delayed Onset Ki Disorder", due to recklessly using his ki against Hit. Due to not controlling his ki properly, he destroys his house so he, Goten, and Chi Chi move into Gohan's house in Satan City. Gohan and Videl are dressed formally, eating lunch with a professor and his wife, while Piccolo babysits Pan at their house. The professor was impressed with Gohan's presentation at the conference and wants to hire him as his assistant. However during lunch, Goku calls Gohan to tell him what happened.

Gohan and Videl later come home to greet Pan. Goku, Goten, Chi Chi, and Piccolo are there. Gohan is surprised that Pan learned a new word, calling Goku "Gramps". Gohan reveals that he turned down the job as the professors assistant, because it would take too much time away from Videl and Pan.

Future Trunks arc

Gohan is met by Future Trunks during a conference and while having ice cream with him is sized up by Future Trunks as not being of the same power that he once was. Gohan introduces Future Trunks to his family not long after, Gohan having to don his Great Saiyaman guise to retrieve Pan once she starts flying around and finishing his work before stopping a tug-of-war over Future Trunks' sword between his daughter and old friend. Gohan, Future Trunks and Pan go outside, Gohan revealing that he wishes he could be stricter with her but cannot due to his getting "soft" whenever he looks at her. Gohan bids Future Trunks a farewell and realizes that he forgot to ask Future Trunks why he had returned to the past to begin with.

Later he and Chi-Chi go to see Kuririn. Chi-Chi explained that she was worried about Goku, and cooked a lot of food for him to eat, which is in a giant pack carried by Gohan. Kuririn explains that he hasn't seen Goku. Including that as a police officer, if he knew anything he would share it to Chi-Chi, and rushes off to go on patrol. Gohan tries to calm Chi-Chi down as they both notice Goten and Trunks flying. At Bulma's house, Chi-Chi calls for her with Gohan flying and carrying her. As both land, Chi-Chi asks her where Goku is. Bulma plays innocent and says he has no idea. After Shu appears and gives Bulma a status update about the time machine, and she explains to a confused Chi-Chi that the time machine is her newest product. soon after they find Goten with Vegeta. Soon after Kuririn and Piccolo arrive, asking if they defeated Black Goku yet. Chi-Chi asks Bulma what's going on, when Goku appears, with his injuries healed but his stomach empty.

As Goku eats, Bulma explains to everyone about Future Trunks' world being in danger, and a fake Goku rampaging. By learning the true origin of Black Goku being originally the Universe 10 Supreme Kai Gowasu's apprentice Zamasu from the unaltered main timeline. Gohan is horrified to learn that Zamasu swapped body with Goku through the Super Dragon Balls, then destroys the Dragon Balls and killed him, Goten and Chi Chi in that unaltered main timeline, and lastly invades Future Trunks' timeline with the aid from Zamasu of that timeline to cause havoc around humanity and kills all gods around the universe, which is the reason why Future Trunks had to return to the main timeline to warn about this threat.

After Zamasu's demise at cost of sacrificing Future Trunks' universe by Future Zen-Oh, with Future Trunks, Future Mai, including Future Zen-Oh are the only three survivors from their universe, Gohan is seen with Piccolo flying to bid Future Trunks and Future Mai a farewell to find another world safely, with the spitting image of Gohan's future universe counterpart is seen on the present Gohan by Future Trunks.

Following this Gohan partakes in the Universe 7 vs Universe 6 friendly baseball game and fills the role of catcher. Gohan admits to not knowing much about baseball but tells his dad to just throw the ball at him and that should work. Seeing Champa is up first, Beerus instructs Goku to throw the ball as hard as he can. Goku, taking the advice literally, powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and throws the pitch as hard as he can, engulfing the pitch in his godly ki much to Gohan and Champa's shock, leveling half of the playing field. To everyone's shock Gohan actually caught the ball bare handed and emerged from the rubble mostly unharmed, laughing that he almost got vaporized giving Champa his first strike. Later when Gohan is up to bat, Piccolo pulls him aside and instructs him to hit the ball to Magetta. Piccolo tells Gohan that he wasn't present for the tournament but Magetta can't fly. Gohan does as instructed but Botamo and is thrown into the air to catch it, however Champa intervenes and grabs the ball himself and throws it to Yamcha and hits him in the spine however Yamcha landed on 3rd base, making him safe.

Not to long after this Gohan notice his dad Goku acting strange and opts to follow him one day as the Great Saiyanman with Goten. After witnessing his odd behavior Gohan tells Goten he will invite them over to eat tomorrow and confront him on it. After supper where Goku was normal Gohan and Goten confront Goku and Goku tells them someone is out to kill him and they promise not to tell Chi Chi. Piccolo, who was present for dinner notices Gohan is thinking about something and confronts him on it and Gohan comes clean and tell's Piccolo. Piccolo initially not concerned saying that there isn't many who could actually threaten Goku until they both feel Goku's ki disappear. Both instantly realize Goku has turned Super Saiyan Blue and the situation is serious and head of to help Goku. Gohan tells Goten to stay but Goten protests saying he can help and isn't useless. Gohan relents and allows Goten to come along. When they catch up to Goku they find his dead corpse on the ground. Initally sad Piccolo throws Goten aside and begins CPR but isn't working. Gohan sensing something looks up and notices a giant ki blast falling back to Earth at Goku and has everyone move. It is revealed that Goku fired the blast at himself to revive himself after he died. Goku tells them to get away and Hit is here for them. Gohan and the others leave Goku to confront Hit alone but return with Chi Chi later as Piccolo reveals Chi Chi forced them to tell her.

A few weeks later Gohan hears of a Great Saiyaman Movie where he is to battle Mr. Satan, but instead of having Gohan play the role, the film studio got Barry Kahn, a world famous actor, to play the role. Gohan heads to the set with Videl and Mr. Satan and Pan and meet's Barry who tries to hit on Videl but Videl turns him down harshly and walks away with Gohan. Barry quickly covers for himself as camera's were present. Barry's ego and vanity causes him to change much of the film to make it much more action packed, with stunts that were impossible and fatal for ordinary people to perform so Gohan sneaks into the stunt double's room in his Great Saiyaman outfit and convinces the stunt double to leave it to the real Saiyaman. Due to the extreme amount of changes Barry made to the script Gohan ended up acting majority of the film with Barry barely doing anything. As the filming progressed and Gohan keep performing these normally fatal and dangerous stunts effortlessly he kept gaining more and more attention, with Barry becoming more and more jealous of him, even with the film's love interest starting to fall for Gohan.

During the filming a bank robbery takes place and Gohan in Great Saiyaman gear actually flies away to go and take care of it, leaving some of the crew to wonder if it really is the true Great Saiyaman. Krillin initially confronts the robbers but is taken out by Gohan entering the bank. The robbers recognize Great Saiyaman when a parasite the Jaco has been chasing attaches itself to one of the robbers, causing him to bulk up and slap the other through a wall and attack Gohan. While initially taken aback by what was happening Gohan at first fell back effortlessly dodging the rapid fire punches and kicks but tells him not to get cocky and levels him with one kick and prepares to finish them off with a Kamehameha but thinks twice about it not wanting to attract attention to himself for using a world wide known move and instead creates a new attack on the spot a orange finger beam he quickly names "The Great Saiyaman Beam".

Afterwords Kuririn confronts Gohan about being there calling him by name but Gohan protests and calls himself the Great Saiyaman. Kuririn relents and plays along, asking him how does his wife allow Gohan to dress so stupidly at his age. Gohan proudly proclaims Videl think's it is cool and supports him 100% and goes back to posing and while posing notices the parasite slide into the sewer. The news cover the story but Barry quickly swoops in and claims it was a publicity stunt for the film and the Great Saiyaman isn't working on the film as he is a washed up has been hero who needs someone like him to give him some spot light, much to Gohan's annoyance who is talking to Hercule about it.

During the conversation the films love interest catches Gohan unmasked. Gohan worried about his job now is releaved when she says that she doesn't care and finds it cool that he is just a normal person under neath the helmet and asks Gohan to fly her home like in the film so she can see things from his point of view. Gohan while hesitant at 1st, Hercule convinces him to do so and he will distract Videl.

While flying her home Jaco, believing Gohan is infected with the parasite fires his Super Elite Cannon at Gohan and Gohan dodges it landing on Jaco's ship telling him to stop. They land and Jaco explains what he is after, a parasite named Watagash who brings out the evil in people's hearts. The more hatred they have the stronger the result. After this Gohan runs Cocoa home and they practice the film lines. During the practice Cocoa breaks down and has a flashback to Barry who is blackmailing her to keep Gohan in her apartment all night so the paparzite can get photos of her and Gohan together as revenge for Gohan and Videl standing them up. While Cocoa doesn't tell Gohan she closes the blinds after Gohan re motivates her and they head up to the roof where they practice all night. After they are done Cocoa tells Gohan her apartment is dangerous and she kisses him. Gohan nervous flies off quickly but not before Barry gets several photos of them. Gohan heads back home and is greeted by Videl, who was under the impression that Gohan was doing a late night filming.

Gohan opting to go along with it says ya and before they can eat Barry arrives at there house and attempts to Blackmail Gohan and Videl with the photos he took. Videl enraged at Barry she calls him pathetic and lacking in self confidence saying that Gohan has a reason for doing what he was doing and trusts him. His coincidence restored Gohan tells Barry to leave.Barry attempts to intimidate Gohan but Gohan blasts him into a wall with a weak Kiai and angrily demands he leaves now . Outside Barry is enraged he got embarrased and beat up by Gohan when Watagash infects him. Barry with his new power sneak attacks Gohan and Videl. Gohan shoves Videl aside and takes the sneak attack which knocks him out cold. When he comes around he notice Pan is missing with a message written into the wall telling him to come to the TV station. Enraged Gohan heads off instantly and confronts Barry, who has been gaining a lot of media attention on top of the studio with Pan, who isn't scared but amused. Barry mocks Gohan asking him to do a cheesy catch phrase for him but Gohan instead charges him and unloads on Barry and overwhelms him and knocks him transforming body to the ground. Barry now unrecognizable continues to power up due to his hatred while Videl arrives to get Pan along with the Director and a film crew with Cocoa to record and watch the fight. Barry now larger then a skyscraper attacks Gohan and Gohan realizes that Barry is far faster then he is, appearing to actually teleport and knocks Gohan around for a bit. Gohan attempts to keep up for a time but is eventually caught and crushed in Barry's hands and blasted into space with a massive eye beam.

Cocoa believing Gohan to be dead begins to cry but Videl tells her to be quite and explains that she and Pan believe in him. Videl continues that to her Gohan is a invincible Superhero who can never be beaten and Gohan would never allow himself to lose in front of her. Together with Pan, Videl and Pan call out to Gohan who is floating above the clouds injured from the blast. Hearing Pan Gohan regains the will to fight and reminds himself he will never lose for Pan no matter what and powers up to Super Saiyan and flies back down, with the Director calling the form "Super Great Saiayman." Not wasting time Gohan begins to charge up a Super Kamehameha while Barry charges up a even larger Eye Beam and fires it. Gohan fires his attack, calling it the "Super Great Saiyaman Beam" and effortlessly plows through Barry's attack and nearly kills him defeating Watagash and Barry leading to Jaco coming and and recapturing Watagash.

Gohan instinctively begins to pose in Saiyaman style and mouths off to Barry's unconscious body he was holding back on him. After his posing Gohan comes back down and apologizes to Videl for making her worry. The Director was able to work the battle as the final scene of the film and the film is overwhelmingly positive by the public. A heavily injured Barry is present but a shell of his former vain self, with Hercule speaking over him and Cocoa actually blackmailing Barry telling him that if he reveals that Gohan is the Great Saiyaman she will use the proof Gohan gave her to show the public that Barry was the monster who attacked the city. At the screening of the film, Goten is once again overjoyed about the Great Saiyaman wanting to use the Super Great Saiyaman Beam as his new attack with Chi Chi proud of Gohan. Goku also present reveals he is proud as well but fell asleep during the film as he likes to be in fights not watching fights. Chi Chi attacks Goku and begins to berate him while Videl and Pan smile at Gohan.

After this Chi Chi and Goten invite Gohan over and they head out to the fields and notice Goku plowing the fields and training. Chi Chi says that she thought of the idea as it keeps both Goku and her happy. Goten reveals that dad wants a sparring partner and thought of Gohan. Gohan attempts to get out of it by mentioning Whis, Vegeta and Piccolo but they are all busy. Gohan reveals he would love to but he doesn't fight anymore but know someone who does and turns into the Great Saiyaman and approaches Goku who calls him Gohan initally. Gohan protests and tells him he got him confused with someone else. Chi Chi is happy and says Gohan is in total character.

Gohan then dares Goku to take him on and he is here to help someone in need of a sparring partner. Goku accepts and charges Gohan. Gohan while initially stunned by Goku's speed was able to block the shot and actually push back his father, with Goku revealing he was testing him and powers up to Super Saiyan with Gohan throwing off the Saiyaman helmet and going Super Saiyan as well. Ultimately, their match ends when Chi Chi yells at them to stop as they ended up destroying the entire field and countyside.

Universe Survival arc

After learning that Future Zen-oh wants a preview of what a martial arts tournament is and only gives Goku an hour to find two more team members Goku instantly heads to Earth at the request of Beerus, who yelled at Goku to take responsibility for the destruction of 11 other universes. Goku instantly heads to Vegeta who turns him down saying he is waiting for his child to be born and suggests his son, Goku looks at Goten and Trunks who are training with Goku saying they aren't ready yet and suddenly figures out who he was talking about and goes to Gohan. Goku asks Gohan but Gohan is once again hesitant and says that he still doesn't have his instincts back. Goku tells Gohan that a good fight is all Gohan need to get his instincts back and reminds him of their fight in the fields a few days ago. Goku decides to tell Gohan what the stakes are and Gohan is scared and asks his dad what will they do if they lose and Goku says they will deal with it. Gohan, angry at his father for his irresponsibility, calms down when he sees Pan and Videl, with Videl telling Gohan to partake in the fight and to listen and respect his dad's wishes once in a while. Motivated, Gohan agrees to fight. At this time Hercule and Buu arrive with Goku convincing Buu to fight, bringing along Hercule to act as Buu's handler. Gohan having found his gi once again arrives on the Sacred World of the Kai's. Beerus was initially unamused with Gohan and Buu as the choices but he quickly warms up to Gohan after Goku revealed that Gohan suggested they keep the destruction of the universe if they lose quiet as it would cause a panic, which Beerus thought was a great idea.

After witnessing Buu's victory Gohan requests to go next and squares off with his foe, Lavender and is considering taking it slow so he can regain his fighting senses. Goku tells him no and to go all out at him since he can't sense him thus making Gohan's plan useless. Realizing his father is right Gohan says he will go all out from the start, saying he needs to see how strong he is so he can know where he needs to improve. Gohan and Lavender engage each other in rapid fire punches and kicks with Gohan driving him back. Gohan goes for a early knock out but Lavender attaches himself to Gohan's arm and sprays him in the face with poison blinding him, allowing Lavender to batter Gohan around. Hercule is worried about the poison but Goku says it could be bad but this is perfect training for Gohan as he is blinded and can't sense his opponent and tells Hercule that Gohan is at his absolute best when he is backed into a corner like this and this is perfect for bringing back his fighting senses. Rou begins bragging that Gohan will die if he doesn't give up as his body will rot away.

Shin takes out senzu beans and says that is Universe 9 can do it so can we. Shin is about to throw Gohan a senzu bean but yells at him to stop and says he refuses it and wants to win under his own strength to Goku's approval. Gohan then begins to concentrate and tones out Lavender's voice and using his ears is able to pinpoint his attacks and is able to block them, much to Lavender's shock calling it a fluke and tries again and Gohan blocks all of them and retaliates. Lavender falls back and bombards Gohan with ki blasts only to have Gohan block and deflect all of them. Lavender flies up and attacks from afar knowing how Gohan is sensing him. Hercule and Shin are worried again but Goku tells them to relax and while admits this may be bad reminds them that the deeper the hole Gohan is in the better for him right now as Gohan is remembering how to fight. Having been bombarded with numerous shots Gohan says his potential is far from unleashed and accesses his full potential and pushes it one step farther into Super Saiyan shocking everyone. The Zeno's are amazed at the form and call it very pretty and strong. While the God's present discuss the form, a fighter from Universe 11 says that the individuals from Universe 7 must be able to hide their true powers.

Lavender isn't impressed at the form and attacks again only for Gohan to deflect the blast and the numerous ones that follow, then Gohan suddenly charges him and attacks. Lavender assuming Gohan is able to see again begins to protest but Gohan tells him he is still blind but his energy is telling him where he is. Goku impressed by Gohan and says not bad. Whis calls what Gohan is doing as brilliant using his energy like a radar but says it is a double edged sword and says that his Super Saiyan form will accelerate the poison. Gohan attacks and overwhlems Lavender and throws him to the ground hard, with Lavender barely able to stand. Gohan flies in for the final blow but the poison accelerates to Gohan's heart nearly killing him and powers him back down to normal. Lavender begins to batter a dying Gohan around more and says he will enjoy killing him, Gohan not done yet stands back up and powers up once again to Super Saiyan, ignoring the risk to his life much to Shin's protests and attacks once again. After another exchange Gohan fires a Kamehameha at Lavender's attack and begins to overpower him but the poison reachs Gohan's arms and Gohan is overwhelmed by Lavender's attack and Lavender tries to kill Gohan with another blast of his poison breathe. Gohan having had enough of Lavender's games flies straight through the poison to everyone's shock however Gohan emerges unhamred and grabs Lavender in a Full Nelson. Lavender asks how and Gohan replies he doesn't need eye sight to grab him at this range and flies straight up high into the void and turns upside down and flies back down to the arena floor as fast as he can. Lavender attempts to escape but Gohan being far physically stronger is able to restrain Lavender and piledrive him clean through the arena floor knocking Lavender out cold. A near dead Gohan rises to his feet and declares himself the winner and passes out.

The Grand Priest moves in to inspect the damage and says that since both fighters are unconscious the fight is a draw much to everyone's disappointment, saying that a great fight shouldn't end like that. The fight over Goku goes to the floor and gives Gohan a Senzu Bean and tells Gohan the news. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being stronger but Goku tells Gohan that he is amazingly strong as he is and is proud of him and says that he is genuninely excited from watching him fight and can't wait for his fight now. Gohan seeing how excited his dad is cheers up and stands up saying he still wants to become stronger. The Grand Priest then announces that the losing Universes will be destroyed in the tournament and says that 4 universes are exempt from entering as they are too strong and says that Zeno wanted to blow up the weak universes anyway and this tournament gives the weak ones a chance to prove theirmworth to Zeno. Universe 7 is actually declared the 2nd weakest Universe with a mortal rating of 3.18, with Goku, Vegeta and Gohan making up most of the rating. Universe 9 is declared by far the weakest with a meager 1.86. Goku's fight is up next and before leaving the ring the Grand Priest repairs it. As Goku gets ready, Gohan wishes his father luck and Goku and Gohan fist bump.

While the battle between Goku and Toppo goes on, Gohan remarks that he is getting excited watching the battle between them. After the battle Gohan and Goku begin to form the team, with Gohan suggesting Piccolo and Master Roshi. When Goku suggests Krillin, Gohan doubts him and Goku requests they simulate the battle with image training. It was determined initially that Krillin would be slaughtered but Goku told Gohan he hasn't seen him lately and said he would be fine and told Gohan to come and see. Goku and Gohan go and get Krillin and Android 18 and they both agree but Gohan wants to test Krillin 1st under the tournament rules. Gohan was initially surprised at Krillin's increased power but begins to overpower him but falls out of the ring after Krillin uses his new technique, the x100 Solar Flare. Realizing he is still rusty Gohan heads off to find Piccolo.

After finding Piccolo and filling him in, Piccolo agrees, and says he wants to take the time they have to re-train Gohan to use his old powers again. Piccolo reveals he has 2 Senzu Beans and they will only use them when they are done and not before and demands Gohan to come at him. Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan and attacks but is easily pushed back by Piccolo who is still wearing his weights. Piccolo reveals that Goku came to him a while ago and already asked him and was concerned about Gohan in the tournament. Goku mentioned that while incredibly strong he is extremely rusty and entrusted Piccolo to get his senses back. Piccolo tells Gohan he has one major weakness and that is he has been too eager and that is hindering his power and always has. Piccolo tells him to settle down a bit. Gohan, listening, powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 once again. Piccolo and Gohan begin to battle and Piccolo takes off his weights saying that is enough of a warm up and quickly gains the upper hand on Gohan and entangles him in his extended arms and begins to strangle Gohan, telling him he will murder him if he doesn't get out of it.

Gohan wonders how Piccolo get so strong and Piccolo screams at him that he hasn't been sitting around while he studied as Gohan passes out into a near death state. Piccolo brings his pupil in and shoots him in the heart with a Kiai reviving him. After coming to Piccolo tells Gohan that he hasn't given his heart into the warrior that lives inside him and this causes him to let his guard down at vital moments. Piccolo goes on to say that his great power always goes to his head and "you get drunk on power" and become arrogant and overconfident, leading to him always being defeated. Gohan powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 and heeding Piccolo's words attacks again and does better but Piccolo screams at Gohan that Super Saiyan isn't his true power and screams at him to re-awaken "your true self".

Gohan, finally giving into the warrior in his heart heeds Piccolo's words and finally reawakens his Potential Unleashed state. Piccolo, proud of Gohan, summons his clones and fights Gohan again, with Gohan saying he isn't gonna hold back. The clones attack and Gohan defeats them all with simple single blows and even takes out Piccolo in one shot by chopping his arm clean off. Gohan, shocked that he actually got the real Piccolo, hesitates and Piccolo attacks him from behind with his severed arm. Piccolo says that he dropped his guard again and tells Gohan that he gets that from his father and tells Gohan not to be like his dad and to not stop until the fight is over. Gohan agrees and they take a break, with Gohan cutting off a T-Rex's tail and cooking it for them. Piccolo tells Gohan that he believes that his current state isn't his true and full power and believes Gohan can push himself much farther and Piccolo extends his hand and tells Gohan to give him the chance to help him attain that power. He asks Gohan is he curious to how strong he can become. Gohan says yes and shakes Piccolo's hand without hesitation and suggests how about working on a few tag team attacks. Piccolo says he likes the idea and agrees.

Later Gohan and Piccolo are meditating together and Piccolo tells Gohan that he has taught him as much as he can and together they go to find Goku, who is eating with Master Roshi, Tien and Chiaotzu. Goku asks for a fight with Goku which shocks everyone. They move out into a mountain plateau and Roshi tells them it is a tag team battle royale just like the tournament. Tien tells Goku they should be careful so they don't hurt them but Goku tells Tien that they will get hurt if they are not careful as Gohan charges both of them. Goku blocks the shot and is struggling to keep up with Gohan and has to escape briefly. Gohan tells Tien and Goku he isn't full power yet which scares Tien however Piccolo reminds Gohan to cool it and Gohan reels himself back in. Piccolo then begins to power up and Tien tells Goku that they need to stop Piccolo now and they both charge Piccolo. Gohan suddenly throws himself in front Piccolo and drops Tien with a massive body shot shocking Goku at Gohan's new ferocity then watches as Gohan powers up a bit more and attacks Goku again. Goku is able to stand his ground but is being gradually overwhelmed by Gohan's massive increase in power. Tien staggers back to his feet and prepares to shoot Gohan with the Tri-Beam but Goku tells him to ignore Gohan and hit Piccolo. Tien takes aim at Piccolo, but Gohan having heard kicks Goku away and fires a small explosive ki blast at Tiens feet to stop him and punches him straight through the mountain. Goku comes to Tien's aid and grazes Gohan as Gohan dodges Goku's attack. Tien pulls himself out of his hole and yells for Goku to look out. As Goku turns around he finds Piccolo behind him charged up and unleashed his Hyper Explosive Demon Wave on Goku. Goku attempts to block it but can't and is overwhelmed by the blast.

Gohan and Goku look to keep going but Tien tells them that is enough as the arena no longer exists. Not satisfied Gohan wants Goku to fight him one on one with Goku answering by going Super Saiyan 2. Tien and Piccolo move away as Gohan powers up to his Potential Unleashed state. Goku, shocked, asks Gohan no Super Saiyan and Gohan answers no and his goal is a ultimate form that no one has ever seen before. They begin fighting and while initially even, Gohan is pushing back Super Saiyan 2 Goku and blocking all of his attacks with no issues. Goku then has to use Instant Transmission to give himself an edge and knocks Gohan down hard and fires a kamehameha at him with Gohan returning one of his own. Goku asks Gohan to power up more and Gohan begins to do so but Goku uses Instant Transmission again to knock Gohan back. Gohan powers up more and chases Goku up into the air and begins to batter Goku around with no issues and demands Goku get serious. After being thrown into the sky Goku has no choice and powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and engages Gohan again. Gohan charges at Goku and Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken. Hearing Piccolo cheering on Gohan from the ground Gohan smiles that he pushed his dad to his limit. Gohan and Goku move in for the final blow, with the impact being felt all across the planet and shocking the likes of Vegeta and Whis whom is watching the fight from Capsule Corp. When the dust clears Gohan falls unconscious. After taking some senzu beans Goku reveals he is extremely proud of Gohan and happy that Gohan is strong enough to make him get serious.

Impressed with Gohan, Goku reveals he is stepping down as Team Captain and appointing Gohan as the New Captain of Team Universe 7, much to Gohan's shock. With Gohan now in charge they reveal the news to Beerus, Whis, Supreme Kai, and Old Kai and Gohan instantly calls a meeting with all the members of Team Universe 7 to develop a strategy.

When Majin Buu falls sleep and Goku has gone to try to wake him up, most of the team meets at Capsule Corp. but Gohan decides to tell them the truth about the universe being erased if they lose when Krillin mentions prize money as a reward. Goku suggests they make Frieza as Majin Buu's replacement, much to Gohan's shock but relents because there is no one else to recruit. Vegeta and Frieza begin provoking each other and Gohan once again asks Vegeta to put aside the past so they can fight for the universe. Gohan and Piccolo decide to take command because Goku and Vegeta are not likely to rely on teamwork.

When the team is finally complete with ten members, Whis takes them to the World of Void, where they meet the warriors of the other universes. When the tournament begins Gohan goes over his battle plan with everyone which is to stand in a circle and fight as a group and using teamwork. Vegeta protests calling it boring. When the fighting begins Goku, 17, 18 Vegeta all run off instantly. Frieza walks off also but calls Gohan's plan interesting and nice but wants to get involved with the chaos. Gohan along with Beerus protest but Roshi calms Gohan down quickly telling him he shouldn't be shocked those 5 aren't following it. Gohan regains his composure and stand with Tien, Krillin, Piccolo and Roshi and fend off a attack from Universe 9 using teamwork. Gohan's plan appears to work, despite Tien, Roshi and Krillin being far weaker then the Universe 9 attackers.

After Univers 9 is erased, Gohan is just as shocked as the other fighters. They are attacked by Universe 10's Jium whom Krillin and Master Roshi defeat. Gohan witnesses Kale's rampage. After her rampage, Gohan is separated by the others, but they successfully regroup. After deciding that his plan would no longer work based on the current state of the battle field Gohan suggests it is best to break off into groups of 2, with Tien and Master Roshi being one and Gohan and Piccolo heading off in another. While wondering Gohan is attacked by Botamo and attacks. Botamo initially mocks his attempts when Goku arrives to watch the fight and questions what is Gohan doing. Eventually Gohan's plan is quickly realized as Gohan's attacks begin to lift Botamo clean off the ground with Gohan effortlessly able to punch Botamo off to the ring side and kick him high into the air and blast him over the edge with a Kamehamaha. Goku and Piccolo both proud of Gohan as they part ways again.

Shortly after Piccolo and Gohan are attacked by Obuni and Rubalt, the final survivors of Universe 10. Rubalt quickly attacks Piccolo sending him flying away leaving Gohan alone with Obni. In his base form Gohan is able to easily match Obuni. However when Obuni begins to use his technique of displacing his ki across several copies of himself Gohan begins to struggle finding the real one. Whis points out this is a problem for Gohan as Gohan doesn't actually use his eyes to find his opponent but rather instinctively his senses instead. Having a plan Gohan powers up and dares Obuni to try that again. Obuni obliges and Gohan takes the hit but this time doesn't budge. Piccolo appears having quickly disposed of Rubalt and watches Gohan fights back now. Gohan takes another hit and counters again. Whis points out that Gohan's plan is effective and will work but relies on Gohan being able to outlast his opponent due to taking so many powerful hits. Beerus concerned pleads with Gohan to not fail. Eventually Obuni's runs out of ki due to using far too many feints and Gohan begins to pummel him and overwhelm him, much to the delight of Beerus, Shn, Old Kai, and Whis. Gohan suddenly does a feint of his own blinding Obuni and jumps into the air and fires a Super Kamehameha knocking Obuni clear out of the ring. Gohan lands and finds a locket Obuni had around his neck which was of his family. Gohan becomes sad and mournful of what he has just done but Piccolo snaps him back to reality and that they need to be moving.

Sometime later, Gohan and Piccolo are approached by Universe 6's Dr. Rota. Dr. Rota wants to reveal his ability, however before he can do so, he is taken out by a powerful Ki Blast. Gohan and Piccolo hide. Piccolo throws a rock out in the open which is destroyed by the same Ki Blast that took out Dr. Rota. Piccolo says its an attack that focuses energy in one point like the Special Beam Cannon and is shot from far away. Also, Piccolo cannot sense the attacker's energy. Gohan asks if Dr. Rota is dead, Piccolo says that if he would be dead then the attacker would have been disqualified, meaning he is still alive. Gohan and Piccolo decide to move to an area with rubble without the attacker seeing them. Afterwards, Piccolo's arm is shot off, however Piccolo regenerates, and the two decide to find the attacker. While spheres are patrolling the area, Piccolo puts his arm out in the open, and is shot, however he dodges it. Gohan saw the direction of the shot and the two decide to head there to take out the attacker. Gohan throws a rock which Piccolo blows up with a Ki Blast, creating dust, which they use as cover. In the dust, Piccolo finds one of Prum's spheres. Piccolo wonders what the sphere does, and the two are attacked once again. Piccolo destroys the sphere, revealing that the sphere had heat. Piccolo then takes a shot that was meant for Gohan, this time, both of his arms are shot off, however Piccolo regenerates once again. Piccolo reveals that the attacker is looking for their body heat, explaining why the attacker was capable of shooting them even in the dust. Piccolo and Gohan then heat up the entire area with heat in order to trick the attacker. Prum then bombards the entire area with Ki Blasts, cutting off Gohan and Piccolo. Gohan and Piccolo hide under a rock, as Tien comes to help them, dodge all the Ki Blasts. Gohan and Piccolo witness as Tien is eliminated by Hermila. After Hermila and Prum are eliminated, Gohan and Piccolo depart together.

Later on, Gohan is separated from Piccolo and is attacked by Frieza and Frost. Still not trusting him, Frost asks Frieza to eliminate Gohan. Frieza obliges and attacks Gohan, tackling him through a mountain. Frieza resumes his attack and Gohan avoids it, powering up to his Ultimate Form and pushes Frieza back with ease. Somewhat taken aback by Gohan's power Frieza, powers up to his Golden Form and re-engages Gohan. While both fighters manage to damage each other, Frieza eventually beats Gohan and knocks him out cold. Frost now approaches and congratulates Frieza, saying he didn't know he had that kinda of power. Frieza tells him with enough training he can attain it to someday and shows Frost the 100% Power state to which Frost reveals he is already aware of. After telling Frost the weakness of the form, that which Frost wasn't aware of, Frieza quickly blasts him out of the ring with Gohan snapping right back up to his feet. Stunned at what happened, everyone looks on when Beerus realizes that Gohan knew Frieza could be trusted. Gohan reveals he was able to tell on his 1st blocked attack that Frieza wasn't being serious, so he just played along and trusted Frieza knew what he was doing. Frieza confirms this and says that he knew Gohan was strong enough to handle his Golden Form and if he wasn't he would have killed him. Frieza begins to leave with Gohan when Frost attacks Frieza from the stands. However, Zen-Oh erased him on the spot, declaring if Team Universe 6 acts out again all of Universe 6 will be erased. As Champa apologizes, Frieza smiles at Gohan and suggests that they should continue to work together to ensure that their Universe wins to which Gohan smiles at Frieza.

Later, Gohan and Piccolo protected Goku from Saonel and Pirina's attack. During their battle, Piccolo and Gohan seem to be at a slight disadvantage against the duo, having to save each other on several occasions. However, as the fight goes on Gohan seems to be gaining more and more ground on them in just his base form and is able to cause major damage to Pirina after knee dropping his arm off forcing him to regenerate, and blocks Sanoel attack to Piccolo with a Masenko. The battle resumes later after Goku's fight with Kefla and Gohan and Piccolo both sense a change in their Namekian foes. Gohan realizing that they have fused with every single Namek in Universe 6 powers up to his Ultimate state and says that there vitality and endurance is far to high right now so he tells Piccolo he doesn't need to worry about killing them which is why he is going full power at them and asks Piccolo to charge the Special Beam Cannon to maximum. As Gohan fights both of them Piccolo let their spirit get the better of him and fires his attack to early as it does nothing to Pirina who responds by hitting them with a Mouth Ki Wave. In his mind Piccolo is met by Kami and Nail who point in front of him and as Piccolo awakens he finds Gohan shielding him and asks Piccolo to do it again and he won't get lazy this time as he will take them seriously now. Gohan goes back in and begins to dominate both Saonel and Pirina. Having them set up now Gohan charges a Super Kamehameha at the same time as his father, who is stuck in a black hole by Universe 2. Saonel is overwhelmed by the blast and as a last resort Pirina fires another Mouth Wave at Gohan to save themselves. As Saonel pulls himself through Gohan's attack Gohan simply smiles at him as Saonel is pierced clean through his chest by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon and goes on through Pirina allowing Gohan to blast them out of the arena, eliminating Universe 6.

After rejoining with the rest of the remaining team Universe 7, they are attacked by Team Universe 3. As 17 and 18 take care of Viara, Gohan steps in to take on the rest himself, with his plan being to preserve Goku and Vegeta's remaining stamina for Universe 11. Initially Gohan in his Potential Unleashed state is easily able to read and beat back the Universe 3 warriors however they are ordered to fuse into Koichiarator. After fusing Gohan is still able to keep up with the three of them but has a few close calls. Gohan slips and gets into a strength test with Koichiarator. While initially struggling and being shoved through the ring Gohan is eventually able to overpower him and push him off. As he does so Goku and Vegeta come in and knock him away. Goku apologizes for interrupting but says that thanks to Gohan's efforts his stamina has fully recovered. Vegeta tells Gohan they aren't gonna sit back and watch if they are gonna fuse into one fighter at this stage of the Tournament and together the three of them will make short work of Koichiarator and Goku and Vegeta power up to Super Saiyan Blue as Gohan powers up to maximum and they attack together. Goku and Vegeta lead the assault pushing back initially but unable to damage Koichiarator. Paparoni mocks them for their efforts and says they lose. Vegeta smiles at him and tells him to think again as Gohan leaps out from behind Vegeta with a fully charged Ultimate Kamehameha. Beerus and the others now realize that Goku and Vegeta didn't have any desire to fight but simply provided a small distraction so Gohan can charge up one decisive attack. While initially able to block it Koicchiarator is unable to resist for long and appears to be blown apart by Gohan's attack and seems to be eliminated. After powering down Goku compliments Gohan on doing a great job finishing it as Vegeta smiles at Gohan, proud of his efforts as well as Beerus even gives Gohan a show of respect by calling him by his name finally instead of kid. However it is revealed that Universe 3 barely hung onto the edge as Paparoni reveals their trump card, which is to fuse himself with Koichiarator.

The monstrosity was initially able to beat the entire Team of Universe 7 around without much effort and after 18 sacrifices herself to save 17 the remaining fighters fire there strongest attacks but are still pushed back. 17 realizes they can't win and charges through the attack with his barrier and shatters the reactor allowing his teammates to finish off Universe 3.

During the final battle, Gohan teams with Android 17 to battle Toppo. The pair have difficulty facing the Pride Trooper and struggle to find rhythm as teammates. During the battle, #17 tells Gohan that they need to stop trying to coordinate the battle together, as they have never fought with one another before and therefore don't know how to anticipate the needs and movements of one another. They formulate a quick plan, in which #17 will immobilize Toppo and sacrifice himself, giving Gohan an opportunity to eliminate them both from the competition. The plan almost succeeds, though Toppo manages to free himself at the last minute. This battle is interrupted, however, when Gohan and #17 take notice of Frieza's battle with Dyspo.

When Beerus reprimands Frieza for getting to close to the edge of the ring, call out to Frieza, Gohan leaves 17 to hold off Toppo so that he may save Frieza. Frieza reminds Gohan of who he is and asks Gohan what would he do if he betrayed him. An unamused Gohan rebukes Frieza, stating that he will eliminate the undead emperor himself should such a betrayal occur. Frieza is not impressed but agrees to work with Gohan. With his maximum speed, Dyspo is able to dodge Gohan and Frieza's onslaught of attacks however Gohan shocks himself when he realizes he is actually capable of seeing his movements, something Frieza is not able to do. Realizing this, Gohan orders Frieza to trap himself and Dyspo in a Cage of Light so Dyspo can't move so much. Frieza, initially hesitant, relents and agrees. Gohan charges Dyspo and allows himself to be hit so Frieza can trap them. Dyspo tries to reason with Gohan. However, Gohan says he doesn't care and attacks. Dyspo attempts to move but learns he is actually too fast and hits the Cage of Light. Dyspo engages Gohan in a head to head fight using his speed to attempt to hit Gohan faster however Gohan shockingly is able to keep up with Dyspo's speed and begins to take a clear advantage over him and quickly overwhelms him. Before Gohan can land the finishing blow, Frieza loses control of his cage and it breaks. Dyspo attempts to use his speed to eliminate Gohan but, due to being able to see his movements, Gohan catches Dyspo in a rear naked choke and orders Frieza to eliminate them both. Frieza praises Gohan's plan, saying he is indeed worthy of being called their leader, and fires a Death Cannon, eliminating both Dyspo and Gohan. After his elimination, 18 tends to Gohan and asks if he's OK. Gohan says he is fine as Piccolo and Master Roshi praise Gohan's plan of taking out Dyspo and Beerus simply smiles in approval at the young saiyan.

Black Star Dragon Ball arc

After Dragon Ball Z, Gohan is employed by Bulma's company as a researcher and, like Trunks, he rarely trains. He now is more concerned about being a good husband and father. He is one of the first to learn about Goku's transformation back into a child thanks to a wish made to the Black Star Dragon Balls by Emperor Pilaf. They all soon learn that if the Black Star Dragon Balls are not collected and brought back to Earth within a year's time, the planet will explode.

Gohan, along with the help of Bulma and Videl, works on the spaceship used for Goku, Trunks, and Goten (later replaced by his daughter Pan) to go hunt the Black Star Dragon Balls. Even though he had apparently stopped with his training, he was still far stronger than most of his allies, including Trunks and Goten. He was arguably the closest to Goku and Vegeta's league in strength with Uub and Mr. Buu following in close pursuit.

The Baby arc

"My mother can overreact some, which is why I didn't say anything earlier. So what have you done with my brother?"
— Gohan confronting Baby Goten (English Version)

Gohan is later seen again visiting his mother and brother at Capsule Corp. with Videl. They tell Chi-Chi that Goten got into a fight somewhere (with Baby) over at Satan City. Goten returns shortly after, now under the control of Baby. Baby immediately realizes that Gohan is stronger than Goten and could be a little more sufficient body to help him infect Vegeta. Gohan also realizes something is not right with his brother. They two get into a little fight and decide to settle at a remote location. Baby Goten immediately plays the offensive against Gohan, trying to force him to power up (making it easier for him to takeover Gohan's body). Gohan refuses to do so, realizing that if he uses enough energy, he could hurt Goten. Baby Goten then powers up to full strength, cornering Gohan. Having no other choice, Gohan powers up to a Super Saiyan. Baby uses this opportunity and easily takes over Gohan's body. Baby tests Gohan's powers by attacking Piccolo in the area.

Now with Gohan under his control, Baby seeks out his true target: Vegeta. Baby Gohan locates Vegeta and fights an even battle with the Saiyan prince. The fight is soon interrupted by the arrival of Goten, who Baby left an egg implanted inside of, rendering him under his control. With the help of Goten, one of Baby Gohan's attacks pierces Vegeta's skin, which Baby takes the opportunity to liquefy himself and enter Vegeta's body, gaining control of a more powerful host. However, just like Goten, Gohan has an egg implanted inside of him by Baby, bringing him under control of the Tuffle parasite. Later, when Goku, Pan, and Trunks return home from outer space after collecting the Black Star Dragon Balls (which Dende later gave to Baby so he could wish for Planet Plant to be restored), Gohan and Goten appear at their house and transform into Super Saiyans to immediately fight Goku and Pan. Gohan even promises to kill Pan and fires an energy blast at her. However, Goku blocks the attack and the explosion knocks him and Pan down to the ground, rendering Pan unconscious. This angers Goku and he fights at full power, allowing him to gain the upper hand against the controlled Gohan and Goten. However, before Goku fires his Kamehameha at Gohan and Goten, Hercule and Majin Buu show up and explain what has happened.

After being purified by the Sacred Water by Kibito Kai, Gohan, along with Goten, Trunks, and Pan help restore Goku's Super Saiyan 4 powers. Eventually, Goku manages to defeat Great Ape Baby, forcing the Tuffle parasite to flee from Vegeta's body, returning him back to normal. Baby then tries to escape in a spaceship, but Goku fires a powerful 10x Kamehameha up at the spaceship, blasting it to the sun while Baby was inside and killing the Tuffle for good.

Later, Gohan helps in evacuating the population of Earth to the New Planet Plant before Earth's explosion. However, when Goku teleports back to Earth to get a little boy who was left behind during the evacuation, Piccolo suddenly appears, saves the boy, and gives Goku enough energy to teleport back. However, he chooses to share the same fate as the Earth. Moments before his death, Piccolo has a telepathic farewell conversation with Gohan. He tells him that he chooses to remain behind as his death would cause the Black Star Dragon Balls to be eternally turned to stone. This way, no wishes from the Black Star Dragon Balls will be made, saving the Earth from a future disaster. Gohan bursts into tears and pleads for Piccolo to come with them, but Piccolo declines and tells him how proud he is of Gohan for how he has matured and the amazing potential he had displayed over the years. With the conversation over, Piccolo says his final goodbye to Gohan, who screams Piccolo's name in devastating sadness as his mentor dies a dramatic death in Earth's explosion.

The Earth is restored back to normal and everybody is back on it. Gohan says to Goku that he still misses Piccolo, but his father comforts him and says that he misses Piccolo, too, cheering him up. With that, Goku and Gohan are happy that the Earth and its inhabitants are safe for now.

Super 17 arc

"We can't let them do this! They've all been beaten before, we can beat them again!"
— Gohan, while fighting Super 17 (English Version)

Gohan, along with the rest of the gang, fight the villains that escaped from Hell. He mainly battles a revived General Rilldo, saving Pan and Hercule from him. He and General Rilldo have an evenly matched fight before Rilldo unexpectedly uses his metal ray to turn Gohan's right arm and left leg into metal. He is nearly killed, but was saved at the last minute by Majuub.

He then joins the battle (along with Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, and Majuub) against Super 17, even firing an incredible Kamehameha attack, which had no effect (Super 17 absorbed it). He is the first to be knocked out, but is saved, along with the others by Goku, who, with the help of Android 18, eventually kills Super 17 with a Dragon Fist followed by a Kamehameha.

The Shadow Dragon arc

Gohan, along with the rest, learn that thanks to the several wishes made to the Dragon Balls over the years, negative energy has overflowed, turning the balls evil, causing seven powerful Shadow Dragons to emerge from them. Pan and Goku are successful in hunting down and killing most of the dragons, but are no match for the powerful Syn Shenron. Gohan, Trunks, and Goten come to the rescue and revive Goku's energy, while Majuub holds off Syn Shenron. Shenron is, however, relentless at killing Goku, and tries his best to stop the re-powering. He is even successful in landing a devastating blow on Gohan. Syn's efforts are in vain, though, as the three are able to restore Goku's energy.

Goku, now at full power, is more than enough to beat Syn Shenron, but things go for the worse when Syn absorbs all seven Dragon Balls, and transforms into Omega Shenron. Not even Goku is able to comprehend his power. The situation changes when Vegeta arrives and absorbed Blutz Waves from Bulma's new machine, to help him achieve Super Saiyan 4. Gohan warns Bulma that if given too much, he might lose control and become too powerful and uncontrollable (like Baby). However, Vegeta is successfully able to achieve Super Saiyan 4. It is not enough to stop Omega Shenron though, and Goku and Vegeta realize there's only one option: fusion.

Gohan, Trunks, and Goten hold off Omega Shenron long enough for the fusion to be successful, forming Gogeta. Gogeta is far more powerful than Omega Shenron, but because he failed to take the fight seriously, the fusion expires before he kills Omega Shenron. It now seems that all hope is lost, but Goku attempts to form an Universal Spirit Bomb. The rest battle Omega Shenron, but all are defeated easily by him. They do however, hold out long enough for Goku's attack to be complete and kill Omega Shenron, once and for all. After the Battle. Gohan, Videl, and Hercule go home. Gohan is last senn in a flashback as a pre-teen Super Saiyan 2 killing the perfect Cell.

Film Appearances

Dragon Ball Z movie 1

A three-year-old Gohan is with Chi-Chi along with her father, Ox King, when they are attacked by an unknown group of warriors. Goku is out fishing during the attack and after sensing danger, he returns only to find his son has been kidnapped. This was largely due to his possession of the Four Star Dragon Ball. While held hostage at Garlic Jr.'s lair, he ends up eating one of the apples that Nikki was eating, unaware that it has an intoxicating substance (resulting in him entering a state comparable to drunkenness). He eventually wakes up and unknowingly pees on Krillin's head.

Things looking extremely difficult for Earth's hero, Goku's son, Gohan, becomes enraged witnessing his father and friends in danger releases his latent energy, blasting Garlic Jr. into his own vortex to be trapped for an eternity. Remarkably, in the end of it all, Gohan doesn't remember a thing of what happened, instead believing that his father defeated Garlic Jr., and with amazement. Goku figures his son is no ordinary boy, but one with a great hidden potential. While going home with his father, Goku decides to tell Gohan about this when he is older.

Dragon Ball Z movie 2

After Oolong saw the Dragon Balls being congregated to one spot, Gohan accompanied him to investigate (with Oolong in particular planning to wish for another set of panties). However, upon arrival, they ended up witnessing Dr. Kochin using the Dragon Balls to free Dr. Wheelo's Fortress. Gohan and Oolong later ended up attacked by Wheelo's Bio-Men, but Piccolo ended up saving them, although at the cost of being captured (with Gohan believing him to have been killed). He and Oolong were later confronted by Chi-Chi and Goku regarding the disappearances of Master Roshi and Bulma, where they admitted what they had witnessed.

Dragon Ball Z movie 3

Gohan, Kuririn, Bulma, and Oolong are spending a peaceful day camping, but that night a huge fire breaks out in the nearby forest. Using their ki, Kuririn and Gohan put out the fire and use the Dragon Balls to restore the forest. Unknown to our heroes, the fire was started by a space probe landing. The next morning the space pod begins scouting the area and it is soon revealed that it was sent by a Saiyan, Tullece, who has chosen the Earth to plant the Shinseiju (lit. “Tree of Godly Might”). The Shinseiju absorbs the world’s energy, storing it in its fruit, and whoever eats it is granted great power.

Tullece’s minions land and create a fissure in the earth to plant the seed. Kaio recognizes the Shinseiju and warns the Z Warriors of the Earth’s imminent devastation if they don’t destroy it immediately. The Z Warriors head out, but their attacks don’t even leave a scratch on the Shinseiju. Tullece's minions soon appear and a battle breaks out as Tullece watches on from their space ship. The Z Warriors attack with all they have, but it soon become apparent they are no match.

Tullece soon notices the young Saiyan Gohan and appears before him, trying to convince him to join him and help him conquer the universe. Gohan refuses, so Turles decides to kill him, but Piccolo intervenes. Unfortunately he is no match for the Saiyan and is sent flying. Tullece decides to have a little fun and creates an artificial moon, forcing Gohan to look at it and transform. Goku notices this and comes to help, only to be attacked by Gohan in Ōzaru form. Haiya Dragon appears and calms Gohan, but after seeing this, Tullece shots Haiya Dragon. Gohan goes into a frenzy and quickly turns on Tullece. Tullece decides he’s had enough fun and fires a massive ki attack at Gohan, but Goku severs his tail return him to normal just in time so that the attack misses Gohan.

Enraged at Tullece for treating Gohan like this, Goku quickly defeats Tullece’s minions and heads off to take on Tullece. Goku and Tullece’s one-on-one showdown begins and Goku has Tullece on the ropes. However, the fruit of the Shinseiju has finally developed and Tullece grabs one, taking a bite. With the sudden surge of power, Tullece quickly turns the tables on Goku, but the Z Warriors come to his aid. As they take on Tullece, Goku begins to form a Genki-Dama, but the Earth barely has any energy left.

Energy from the Shinseiju suddenly flows into Goku and the Genki-Dama is complete. With the remaining Z Warriors defeated, Goku confronts Tullece and each unleashes their final attack. Goku’s Genki-Dama overwhelms Tullece’s ki attack and hits him head on, sending him flying through the Shinseiju. The massive Genki-Dama also destroys the Shinseiju and its energy is returned to Earth. With peace returned, our heroes enjoy another camping trip.

Dragon Ball Z movie 4

Gohan appears in this film along with Goku, Piccolo, and Kuririn. When we first see him, he is with Icarus and he puts on a dance with him for Piccolo. Without noticing, he starts to whistle and the whistling seems to cause Piccolo a great deal of pain. After apologizing, both of them sense the presence of a high power level heading toward Earth. Gohan arrives at the landing site where Lord Slug and his minions begin to terrorize the city. He loses his Dragon Ball hat that is picked up by Lord Slug. He starts to battle with them, but is taken down by Medamatcha and Angila.

When Lord Slug's machine brings the planet to a deep freeze, he takes refuge with his mother in their house, but flies off to battle him wearing Piccolo's Namekian suit. He fights well, but as he is outnumbered, Piccolo comes to his aide. Together they duel the villains until Gohan is over taken by Medamatcha's creations, but is saved by Piccolo. Goku comes to battle Lord Slug himself, but he has a very hard time of it, and Piccolo once again intervenes. When he has Slug's full attention, he rips off his own ears and tells Gohan to whistle. As Gohan begins to whistle, he weakens Slug, and gives Piccolo the chance to give his energy to Goku, aiding him in his victory over Lord Slug.

Dragon Ball Z movie 5

Gohan accompanied Goku, Kuririn, Oolong, and Icarus on another camping trip (although Goku initially planned to have Gohan finish up his homework first). However, the camping trip was short lived due to Cooler's Armored Squadron ambushing them. Gohan attempted to aid Krillin, but was weakened by Dore grabbing his tail (which Kuririn had attempted to warn Gohan immediately before he had been knocked out by Neiz), with Dore also spinning him around by the tail until Goku interfered.

While the Armored Squadron (who had arrived to kill Goku in the first place) attacked Goku, Gohan remained behind to attempt to restore Krillin to consciousness. Eventually, he flew in an attempt to aid his father, although the then-recently arrived Cooler tried to murder the boy with his Darkness Eye Beam, resulting in Goku taking the blast to save Gohan. They later went into hiding inside of a cave, although they were later trapped inside by the Armored Squadron blasting the landscape. They were later found by the rest of the group by Icarus' scent. Gohan then informed them about Goku's wounded status as well as wanting to know about the survival of the animals in the area. Gohan then, alongside Icarus, traveled to Korin's Tower to get Senzu Beans, also going high into the sky to avoid the Armored Squadron's scouters.

Upon arrival, Gohan attempted to get beans, although he was told to descend the tower because he failed to bring Korin a gift (in the Japanese version, it was because he only climbed halfway up the tower), although largely because of Yajirobe's interference, he got a bean satchel and a spare bean. Gohan and Icarus then departed back to Goku's location, but were ambushed by the Armored Squadron, with Icarus being shot down and Gohan nearly killed by Dore's Can-Opener Attack, although Piccolo intervened, also holding off the Armored Squadron so Gohan can successfully deliver the Senzu Beans to Goku.

He was also pursued by Dore, although Piccolo finished him off with his Chasing Bullet. He eventually arrived at the cave, but the satchel was destroyed by the Armored Squadron commander and sole survivor, Salza (who had escaped from Piccolo due to Cooler's interference earlier). Fortunately, the spare bean was still intact, which Gohan then proceeded to feed Goku the bean. He then attacked Salza in a rage after witnessing Salza defeat Kuririn, but was defeated effortlessly. He then passed out, although not before witnessing Goku emerge from the cave completely healed. Gohan was among those in Goku's mind when he transformed into a Super Saiyan again to defeat Cooler. Gohan later met up with his father after Cooler had apparently been killed, and decided to search the rubble to see if Piccolo was present (due to it shaking), although they soon discovered it was actually Salza preparing to ambush them. However, Piccolo intervened from a distance with his Special Beam Cannon, finishing him off. Gohan then tried to call out to Piccolo.

Dragon Ball Z movie 6

Gohan goes with the other Z Fighters to New Namek, when they all notice that the entire planet has been taken over by a gigantic planet-eating machine known as the Big Gete Star. All of them set out to investigate, seeing that the Namekians have been taken prisoner. Gohan is the first to act, saving a Namekian from being killed. It wasn't long before they find out that Cooler had returned, and he sent his new mechanized soldiers to kill them. Gohan, Piccolo and Kuririn do battle with their metal foes, but it doesn't take long before they begin breaking the Cyclopian Guards apart by upping their attack strength. Though they start doing better, Gohan and Kuririn are taken to the Gete Star and imprisoned, ready to be absorbed for their energy.

After a long battle between Goku, Vegeta, and Cooler, the Saiyans overpower the Gete Star, and Piccolo takes that chance to save Gohan and the rest of the accompanying Z Fighters. They escape before the entire Big Gete Star is destroyed. Together, Gohan and the rest of them return to Earth.

Dragon Ball Z movie 7

Gohan attended his mom and dad in shopping (as Gohan had earlier agreed to undergo Summer School). While having a meal at a penthouse restaurant with his family, Future Trunks, Kuririn, Oolong, and Master Roshi (the latter four having attempted to go to a swimsuit show that actually was not supposed to happen in weeks), Gohan and the others ended up surviving an attempted bombing as well as saved the other patrons. Gohan later attempted to aid Goku and Future Trunks in confronting the entities responsible for the attack: Android 14 and Android 15, who had obviously been targeting Goku due to Dr. Gero's desires of revenge against him. However, Chi-Chi attempted to stop him largely due to his commitment to Summer School. Gohan, however, coldly asked her whether his studies were more important than ensuring Goku survived against the Androids, with Chi-Chi being shocked enough to let Gohan go.

Kuririn later accompanied Gohan (the latter being forced to tag along by Chi-Chi) to aid Goku, and eventually tracked him, Future Trunks, Android 14, Android 15, and the newly arrived Android 13 to an arctic area. He later interfered and aided Goku when it was becoming clear that Android 13 was having the upper hand in fighting Goku, and was himself saved by Piccolo. Afterwards, when Android 13 transformed into Super Android 13 via parts from Androids 14 and 15 (who had been destroyed by Future Trunks and Vegeta, respectively), he was attacked by the Super Android. Gohan later attempted to aid Goku with the Spirit Bomb by attacking Super Android 13 to distract him long enough to ensure Goku got the energy needed. He later ended up hospitalized for the injuries. He then try's to fake an injury when Chi-Chi tells him he starts Crane school the next day.

Dragon Ball Z movie 8

Gohan attended a Hanimani picnic with Future Trunks, Kuririn, Bulma, Vegeta, Master Roshi, and Oolong (with Goku and Chi-Chi not attending due to Chi-Chi wanting to ensure Gohan got into a prestigious school). He later bore witness to Paragus' arrival, and attempted, alongside Kuririn and Oolong, to stop a drunk Master Roshi (who was himself attempting to stop Vegeta from going to the South Galaxy to rule the new Saiyan Empire and defeating the Legendary Super Saiyan plaguing the Galaxy).

Upon arriving at New Planet Vegeta, Gohan, alongside Roshi, Oolong, Kuririn, and Trunks (the latter accompanying them at the last minute due to being suspicious of Paragus' motives and further attempt to get Vegeta to refuse Paragus' offer). Upon witnessing Vegeta meet Broly, Paragus' son, Gohan could not help but express amazement. Gohan later accompanied Kuririn and Future Trunks to investigate the city, due to their distrusting of Paragus. They then discover that the "city" was nothing but ruins, as well as stumbled upon a slave quarry.

Gohan later interfered on the Shamoian slaves behalf and attacked the slavemaster. Gohan later ended up shocked at Goku's arrival (as well as Goku being accidentally punched in the face by Kuririn while using instant transmission to arrive on the planet and showing off, respectively), also learning that Goku himself had been searching for the Legendary Super Saiyan (having been informed of this by King Kai earlier). Gohan, Future Trunks, and Kuririn later questioned the Shamoian slaves (after feeding them) about the status of the Legendary Super Saiyan, and had confirmation that the Legendary Super Saiyan was indeed real, as he was responsible for the destruction of their homeworld prior to Paragus enslaving them. Later that night, Gohan and Kuririn woke up (presumably to ask Goku something), but ended up witnessing Broly attacking Goku in a fit of rage, also being crushed underneath Goku's (now destroyed) mattress by the irate Saiyan after Broly threw it aside.

The next morning, Gohan, alongside Master Roshi, Oolong, Kuririn, and Future Trunks brought along several Shamoian slaves before Vegeta to expose Paragus' deception, with the Shamoians also recognizing Broly as the Super Saiyan who destroyed planet Shamo, as well as witnessing Broly's transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan in a fit of rage. Gohan attempted to prevent Broly from attacking Goku, but Goku ended up pushing him aside due to realizing Broly was far too powerful for Gohan to handle, also being forced to retreat, although not before being hit by one of Broly's Explosive Waves.

Gohan later was shielded by Goku from another blast. Gohan then enters his Super Saiyan state to attack Broly, alongside Goku and Future Trunks. However, Goku later forced Gohan to leave after Broly threatened him, with Goku attempting to hold him off. However, Broly caught up and violently attacked Gohan, eventually resulting in Gohan being snagged by the neck on a beam, nearly breaking it.

He was nearly killed by one of Broly's Eraser Cannons, although he was saved by Piccolo, also being fed a Senzu Bean. He then, alongside Future Trunks, attempted to use a combined Masenko against Broly, but it did not phase Broly at all other than destroying the building he was on, and ended up clotheslined by the insane Saiyan while he attacked Piccolo. Gohan later ended up knocked out, but then donated his remaining energy to Goku as a last resort to put down the Legendary Super Saiyan once and for all.

Just as Camori hits and destroys New Vegeta, the Z Fighters and the slaves escape in the spaceship Piccolo used to follow Goku and Vegeta. Goku and Gohan teleport straight to their garden, where Goku comically recites what Chi-Chi told him to say for the school interview, causing her to faint. The movie ends with Goku and Gohan trying to find water for an unconscious Chi-Chi.

Dragon Ball Z movie 9

A few months after the Cell Games, Gohan and the other Z-Fighters (including a visiting Future Trunks) proceeded to participate in the Intergalactic World Martial Arts Tournament. Gohan managed to get through the preliminary battles and managed to reach the final round of the tournament, alongside Trunks (after defeating Tien), Kuririn (who won by default after Piccolo forfeited out of disgust for the former's poor attempts at fighting the latter), and a sumo-wrestler named Doskoi. After moving the tournament to Battle Island 2, the fighters were to encounter and fight the Intergalactic Fighters (really Hercule's students dressed up like aliens) in specially built Battle Zones underneath the island. Gohan and the others are launched to their Battle Zones in rocket-propelled space pods, with Gohan arriving in his Battle Zone: a surreal world resembling a toy chest.

Gohan then encountered his supposed challenger and one of the Galaxy Warriors: Bujin. Bujin used his telekinesis to hurl several building blocks at Gohan, who hopped away from each one. Bujin then telekinetically yanks the hands of a clock and tries to skewer the teenage Saiyan with them, which Gohan disintegrates with an Aura burst. Gohan states that Bujin was trying to kill him, to which Bujin remarks "you have no idea". Bujin then used his powers to warp the area, revealing the "toy chest" was an illusion, and the Battle Zone was actually a forested area. Midway through the fight, Gohan managed to sense a far stronger power take out Future Trunks.

Gohan then proceeded to rush from the forest where he was fighting Bujin to the location, an ancient ruined civilization, and discovered the other Galaxy Soldiers, alongside the unconscious bodies of Trunks and Kuririn, as well as the group's leader, Bojack. Gohan transformed into Super Saiyan and challenged the warriors, battling them. They broke through the sky, revealing the Victorian-style city Battle Zone where Trunks previously fought and killed Koba, where the rest of the battle takes place. Gohan is dominated by Bojack and almost gets obliterated by a Full Power Energy Ball but is saved when it is deflected by a Special Beam Cannon from Piccolo. Piccolo gets beaten, with Vegeta and Trunks following suite. Gohan again starts to battle them alone. Outmatched, Gohan is near powerless against the Galaxy Warriors and gets caught in Psycho Thread.

Mr. Satan arrives in a space pod and distracts Bojack, saving Gohan. Moments later Bojack had Gohan in a Bear Hug. While struggling and screaming for help, Goku comes to Gohan's aid by using Instant Transmission to punch Bojack. Goku gives Gohan energy and turns Super Saiyan 2. Gohan evaporates Bujin and Bido, killing them with a simple punch and kick. Gohan punches Bojack, penetrating his abdomen but refuses to be beaten. Bojack uses Galactic Buster and Gohan charges a Kamehameha forming a collision. Gohan therefore kills Bojack ending the battle.

While being exhausted, he falls backwards laughing as Goku praises him from Other World, and King Kai jokes that Goku broke the rules of going back to Earth while dead. After the events, everyone is in hospital watching the news that Mr. Hercule is a "true hero" who defeated the alien intruders; this results in several jokes as they laugh.

Dragon Ball Z movie 10

While flying Gohan sensed Broly attacking Goten and Trunks, and rushed to stop the trouble. Gohan then arrived and interfered with Broly's Planet Geyser technique against a weakened Goten and Trunks, also discovering Broly's survival. Upon meeting with the boys, he then explained who Broly was, and that Goku had beaten him, although he was later horrified when he discovered that Broly had also fought and injured Videl. Gohan then vowed to "put [Broly] back again" after deducing that Broly most likely wanted revenge against Goku for his earlier defeat, and fought Broly to a stalemate.

After launching a blast that destroyed part of the area, Gohan realized that Broly has gotten much stronger since their last encounter, but was later saved by Videl, with Gohan expressing relief at her being alright. Gohan then attempted to stop Broly after he cracked the ground in four with an energy wave by launching into the air, and ended up bracing himself for an apparent attack from the deranged Super Saiyan.

However, he then ended up attempting to defend the others when it became apparent that they were the true target, although this failed, leaving Gohan the only one left standing. He then became a Super Saiyan 2 in his rage, with Broly powering up to Legendary Super Saiyan. They then fought, although Gohan was largely getting beaten, eventually being trapped in a backbreaker over the newly formed lava pit. Gohan, however, eventually hit Broly hard enough to temporarily stun him and lured the Saiyan into the magma pit in the hopes of beating him. He succeeded, but was saved by Kuririn (whom he mistook for Piccolo due to his wearing Piccolo's attire).

However, the victory was short-lived when Broly revealed that the lava did not affect him at all. Gohan eventually was put in the vengeful Saiyan's mercy, but eventually broke free in anger at Videl's injured status (having used the last of her strength to hurl a crystal at Broly). Gohan then entered a beam struggle with the mad Saiyan, with Goten later participating, but were on the losing end. Gohan and Goten later were apparently spiritually aided by Goku, and eventually succeeded in launching Broly into the sun. Gohan later noticed that Goku disappeared, although he was certain Goku had been present. He later reunited with Videl, but then was forced to flee when it became apparent that she was upset with Gohan for not coming to her aid earlier.

Dragon Ball Z movie 12

Gohan and Videl appear to fight the dead who return to Earth. Eventually, Frieza arrives and he and Gohan have a brief discussion where Gohan reveals his identity to the tyrant. Frieza sends an army of Hell inhabitants (including former Frieza Force members, Bojack's gang, etc.) to attack Gohan, but Gohan flies through them and defeats Frieza in a single blow. Afterwards, he and Videl hunt down and defeat the other escaped villains.

While flying home, Goten and Trunks tease Gohan and Videl (In the Japanese version, the boys tease Gohan and Videl about knowing that Goku and Vegeta saved the day. But jokes about it on Gohan and Videl by not telling them.) after having watched them kissing earlier on.

Dragon Ball Z movie 13

During a a bank robbery is taking place, the bank robbers are getting away when Great Saiyaman, Gohan’s superhero alter ego, stops the car with his foot and smashes the front end flinging the felons out the car to confront Great Saiyaman II ("Great Saiyawoman" in the English version), Videl's superhero alias. They apprehend the felons and turn them into the police, all the while being spied on by some strange old man in the shadows. A short while later, they are summoned again from their school to rescue an old man who wants to commit suicide.

When Gohan and Videl arrive on the scene, they discover that he is the same man who had been spying on them. After rescuing him, the old man introduces himself as Hoi and tells the two about the legendary warrior Tapion and that he needs their help in releasing him from the music box he is being held in, as the Earth would be endangered if he were not released. Gohan tries to open the box with his massive strength but to no avail. The old man tells them he knows of the Dragon Balls, and advises the couple to use them to open the box. They agree to bring the box to Bulma's home first to see if there was another way to open the mysterious box, not knowing that Hoi had other plans on his mind.

Gohan and the others use the dragon balls to open the box, and they meet Tapion. Shortly after Tapion is released, Hirudegarn's lower half starts to wreck West City. Gohan and Videl arrive at the scene to investigate, but shortly after they arrive, they are almost swept away by the monster's tail. They execute their Great Saiyaman poses, however Hirudegarn's legs are not impressed; he throws the two heroes to opposite sides of the street, causing Videl to lose her helmet, and Gohan losing his turban and sunglasses. Gohan, with Videl's support, immediately counter-attacks. After Gohan powers up to his Ultimate form, Videl thinks Gohan has won, but Gohan says it isn't over yet. Tapion comes to aid Gohan and Videl by playing a magical tune on his Hero's Flute, weakening Hirudegarn's bottom half, causing it to vanish.

Gohan along with Goku, Goten and Videl arrive at Bulma’s house to inspect the destroyed chamber. Tapion appears suddenly, warning everyone the lower half of the creature is on the loose. To stop the creature from uniting its body he asks the group to kill him, in turn killing the creature’s upper half. Then however Hoi and the lower half of the Hirudegarn appear to stop anyone from killing Tapion. When Tapion is about to play the tone from the Hero's Flute, the power of the lower half being so close to Tapion causes the upper half in Tapion’s body to react and release itself. Hoi succeeds in his plans, and with the monster back together, he believes nothing can stop him. A battle begins. With Gohan powering up his maximum potential, thanks to Old Kai's ritual, to do battle.

They launch their counterattack, but are quickly beaten since the monster can easily dodge by teleporting and countering their attacks. Gohan is grabbed and just before he is about to be squeezed into a pulp by Hirudegarn, Vegeta saves him by firing a ki blast at Hirudegarn's arm and proceeds to fight.

Gohan yells at Goku about the weakness of the Hirudegarn. After the battle he witnesses Tapion go in Bulma's new time machine to head back to his timeline.

Upon landing there, both Gohan and Piccolo are shocked seeing Frieza and his army. Tien arrives and says that he didn't bring Yamcha or Chaozu to the battle because it's too dangerous for them. Gohan's Counterpart, Future Son Gohan.

Goku dies from a viral heart disease, and six months later, all the Z-Fighters except Gohan are killed by Android #17 and Android #18. With the death of Piccolo, Kami dies as well and the Dragon Balls are rendered permanently useless, making it impossible for the Z Fighters to be revived.

Thirteen years later, Gohan, now a Super Saiyan, repeatedly tries to challenge the androids, but they are too strong. He begins training Trunks (the son of Vegeta and Bulma), who is eager to defend the Earth. Gohan attempts to provoke Trunks enough to trigger his transformation into a Super Saiyan. Several times, Trunks comes close, but lacks enough motivation to maintain the form.

The androids attack an amusement park. Gohan transforms and battles them but is being overwhelmed. Trunks comes to his aid and fights Android #18 but is easily defeated. Gohan saves him and they hide in some debris. Unable to find their targets, the androids bomb the entire area and leave. Trunks and Gohan survive although Gohan loses his left arm. They go home where he recovers and then resumes Trunks' training.

Just as the training is finished, a huge explosion hits the city. Gohan pretends to agree to allow Trunks to join him in the battle, then knocks him unconscious and goes alone. Gohan unknowingly increases his power to become an Ascended Super Saiyan and puts up a very good fight against the androids, but his lost arm proves to be a major disadvantage and he is eventually killed. Trunks awakens after sensing Gohan's energy signal vanish, and hurries to the city to find Gohan's body laying face down in a puddle of water. Trunks is enraged at the death of his best friend and undergoes his transformation into a Super Saiyan.

Three years later, Trunks and Bulma are working on a time machine when a warning sounds, indicating that androids are nearby. Trunks confronts them but is badly beaten and left for dead. He awakens in his house with his mother at his side, and finally decides they must use the time machine to deliver the medicine needed to cure Goku's heart disease years ago by giving it to Goku himself, hoping that this will prevent Goku's death and prevent their future from happening.

Trunks departs for the past in the time machine as the credits roll, showing scenes of Trunks' battle with Mecha-Frieza, his encounter with Goku and the Z Fighters, and the awakening of Androids 17 and 18.

Trivia

  • The name "Gohan" is a homophone for gohan (御飯), the Japanese word for "cooked rice" which also refers to meals in general, which continues Akira Toriyama's food naming pun diagram. In Mandarin, the reading of 悟飯 is homophone for 午飯 (wǔfàn), meaning "lunch". As a result, in a similar vein to his father's name, Gohan's name in pinyin/Mandarin is read as "Sun Wufan".
  • When Chapter 196 first ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump, Son Gohan was introduced as three years old. However, this would immediately be contradicted in Chapter 197, where Gohan reintroduces himself to the reader as four years old in the title page. While it is possible that Gohan's introduction as three is simply a mistake on the part of Akira Toriyama, this is unlikely, as in that same chapter, Gohan clearly holds up three fingers when proclaiming his age. His age is nonetheless changed to four in the Tankōbon release of Volume 17, and the anime followed suit, claiming that Gohan was four, and changed the scene so that he holds up four fingers instead.
  • Gohan's tail is cut off four times in the anime (twice by Piccolo, once by Vegeta, and once by Goku) before it stops growing back. Piccolo removing it for the second time (along with the transformation that accompanied it) was anime-only filler where the space pod Goku flew in, which was in the mountains before being found by a nearby Grandpa Gohan, appears in the middle of a desert. This is considered to be one of the biggest plot holes in Toei's anime series by fans.
  • Consecutively, Gohan has stayed transformed the longest as a Super Saiyan/Super Saiyan 2, clocking up a total of 29 episodes. Gohan is also the character who goes through the most character design and costume changes.
  • In the English Version, Gohan was originally intended to be named either Einstein or Archimedes by Chi-Chi. Alternatively, some of Ox-King's name suggestions included Ox-King Jr., Ox-Monkey, Big Ox, Oxford, Ox in the Box, Ox-Man and Johnny Oxseed.
  • During the Cell Saga, Gohan has a dream about Cell killing Chi-Chi and Piccolo inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber; However, he previously stated to his father that he did not know what Cell looked like when Goku asked him to imagine Cell killing him and all his friends so he can achieve Super Saiyan form for the first time.
  • In the English version of Dr. Slump, there is a reference to Gohan's alter ego superhero, Great Saiyaman, in the chapter "Here Comes Arale!" The movie which Senbei Norimaki and Aoi Kimidori see and which was originally titled "Nekotoraman vs. Nekotora-7" (a reference to Ultraman and Ultra Seven) in the Japanese version, and is renamed "Tigerman versus Saiyaman" in the English translation.
  • In volume 1 of the Dragon Ball Z manga, Piccolo refers to Raditz as "Raggedy Saiyaman". Saiyaman is what Gohan calls his superhero self.
  • Gohan is the only partial Saiyan to be seen with a tail. Akira Toriyama stated that tails on a hybrid Saiyan is a recessive trait. Although, this is likely because Toriyama stated that he simply forgot Saiyans had tails by the time another hybrid Saiyan was born. However Toriyama recently revealed in an interview that he decided to get rid of Saiyan tails as he couldn't figure out how Saiyans would dress themselves with the tails on and these minutia annoyed him to no end. Thus this is presumably one of the reasons why Saiyan hybrids born after Gohan and the pure blood Saiyans of Universe 6, lack tails entirely.
  • In both manga (Chapter 426) and anime (Episode 205), Gohan was talking to the audience (breaking the fourth wall) about Krillin letting his hair grow out after the Cell Games.
