In spite of this, Yuki maintains a calm, collected attitude most of the time, rarely becoming mad or upset. He is very formal, and kind to those that he speaks to. But he secretly wishes to have Kyo's life. While Kyo wishes to have his life. In adulthood he has a son with Machi.

Background

Fb2-50

Yuki as a child.

Yuki Sohma is the second child and youngest son born to his parents and the younger brother of Ayame Sohma by ten years.

Yuki was favored being born as the Rat, and while his parents were neither rejecting or overprotective, they (mostly his mother as he got along with his father) used Yuki as a tool for their own benefits; including for wealth and status. Meanwhile, Ayame has been unfavored by his mother since Yuki was born, since the Snake is not as valuable as they let him do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted growing up since they had no use for him.

As a young child, Yuki was plagued with severe asthma that inhibited him from doing most things like going outside. When he was still very young, his mother sold him off to Akito due to him being the Rat and therefore the "closest to God". When Yuki first met Akito, he cried and in his mind was deeply emotional, by saying that "I wanted to meet him. I didn’t want to meet him. I want to embrace him. I want to run away. I love him. I hate him". Akito kept Yuki as a playmate for a few years, and they would constantly stay in Akito's room and play together. Occasionally, Akito would have angry outbursts, but would always apologize for it afterward. In the 2019 series, Yuki hated his parents for giving him away to Akito.

As he continued to live with Akito, Yuki mentions that at some point, Akito's mind went insane and she proceeded to torment Yuki for many years. Yuki was verbally, emotionally, and especially psychologically abused by Akito, as he was locked up in a windowless, dark room for days on end. She convinced him that no one would accept him for who he is, including that he was absolutely worthless and that no one would ever come to save him. He was also told that everyone, including several Zodiacs such as Kyo and Hatsuharu, even hated him.

Yuki continued to constantly stay by Akito's side, completely isolated from all of the other Zodiacs. During the Sohma's annual banquet, Yuki heard about the Cat, Kyo Sohma, who isn't even apart of the Zodiac and therefore cannot join in the banquet. Yuki sneaked out to meet Kyo, and Yuki was instantly taken by his "pretty orange hair". Yuki kindly and meekly tried to speak with Kyo, but when Kyo found out that Yuki is the Rat, he angrily began telling Yuki off that he hated him, yelling that his very existence has brought only misfortune to him, and that he would be better of dead. Yuki was devastated and began crying. He went to his mother for consoling, but she slapped him and shouted for him to go back to Akito's side. Because of this event, Yuki began thinking Akito's words were true, that he was hated and that his existence was unnecessary. He hadn't even spoken to the other members of the Zodiac, not even his older brother, Ayame. He once attempted to go to Ayame for help from Akito's abuse, but was instantly rebuked.

For his elementary school years, Yuki went to a private school, separate from all the other Cursed Sohmas. Yuki was jealous by the fact that he had to be all alone while the others could happily go to school together. Because of his abuse, Yuki did everything he could to avoid other people, since he had no idea how to interact with his peers and since he didn’t want to be hated by even more people. That is, until a group of boys invited Yuki to play football and gleefully asked him to be their friend. Yuki was overjoyed, and quickly adjusted to his happy life with his new friends.

One day when he was playing tag outside with his friends, a girl accidentally bumped into him and he transformed into a Rat. Because of this, Hatori Sohma was forced to erase Yuki's friends' memories. Yuki begged and cried for Hatori to not, since they were the first friends he had ever made, but to no avail. Thereafter, as expected, his friends didn't know who he was anymore, leading Yuki to despise Hatori and closing himself off from people once again. He also asked Akito a question once; "Akito... Am I so strange that we have to keep it a secret?", to in which Akito replied "Of course it’s strange that a little boy can transform into a rat. Any normal person would be repulsed if they knew. They’d run away from you. This is why I told you not to get the wrong idea".

Following the incident with his friends, Yuki one day saw a hat flying off to his direction in the streets, and to his surprise, it belonged to Kyo. Yuki attempted to give it back to Kyo, but the latter harshly refused and went back to his adoptive father. This was the final straw and the last ounce of rejection, as Yuki broke down in tears and thinks about the things he had always wanted: "A parent who would hold me close, a home I wanted to return to, a place where I could laugh with everyone…a Yuki Sohma that no one would run away from. That’s what I wanted. That’s all I wanted".

In spite of this, Yuki didn’t want to give up, as he was desperately searching for a reason to keep on living, as he saw Kyoko Honda in the neighborhood; crying to the police since she couldn't find her daughter. Yuki was shocked that there are mothers' who worry about their children, and he then remembered running past a little girl that was matching Kyoko’s description.

Yuki found a young Tohru Honda sitting alone and crying. Upon seeing Yuki, she began running after him, hoping to be saved by him and reunited with her mother. Yuki avoided to be hugged by her, but he surely and slowly led Tohru to her mother: "Right now, this girl’s world is entrusted to me. She’s running after me desperately, so she can find her way home. She’s… counting on me. She needs me". When he finished guiding Tohru back to her mother, Yuki gave her his hat. Exhausted from the whole ordeal, Yuki transformed into a Rat and went into hiding, but expressed that he was extremely happy that he was able to help Tohru, even a little bit. Meeting Tohru inspired Yuki to do his best, and he mentions that she had helped him learn that the world isn’t all darkness. She made him want to hang in there and to survive.

After this event, Hatsuharu Sohma, the Ox of the Zodiac, once confronted Yuki. He told Yuki that he hated him and that it was his fault that people constantly called him stupid, due to the story of how the Rat tricked the Ox to become first in the zodiac legend. After Yuki asked Hatsuharu whether or not he believes he is stupid, Hatsuharu realized the mental trap and that he was in fact not stupid, to in which Yuki told him that he believed him. Hatsuharu has since loved Yuki as a best friend.

Occasionally, Yuki would watch Hatsuharu and Kyo perform matrial arts, and while Yuki expressed an interest in it, he was always refrained to do anything by Akito. It is also mentioned by Hatsuharu that at some unspecified point, Yuki became mute due to the trauma he had suffered.

Since Hatsuharu loved Yuki, he occasionally came to check up on him when he was locked up in Akito's room. It is stated that Isuzu "Rin" Sohma would join too, but she would stay outside and guard so anyone didn't see that they were visiting Yuki. Eventually, due to his traumas and wanting to live independently from the Sohmas, Yuki begged for Shigure Sohma to free him from the Main House by staying with him in his house outside the Sohma compound. Hatsuharu also begged Shigure on Yuki's behalf, and it is mentioned that thanks to Hatsuharu's pleading for Yuki to be freed, he was eventually to leave the Sohma estate and live with Shigure.

Personality

Yuki Sohma is depicted as an attractive, reserved, and accomplished young man with many admirers, but who finds being friendly to be difficult. Yuki is talented at anything he tries (except cooking and cleaning). However when Yuki was young, Akito Sohma kept him isolated from the rest of the family, and convinced him that no one liked or needed him. Because of this emotional abuse, Yuki has low self esteem and feels isolated. He is known as "Prince Yuki"', "Prince Yuki Sohma", and '"Prince Charming" at school, where despite his popularity he must avoid intimacy with girls lest they trigger his transformation into a rat. As he hates his older brother and mother, however he gets along with his father. However, as the story progresses, Yuki begins to open up more and expresses his feelings frequently. It is shown that once he cares about someone, he will make an effort to ensure that they are happy and satisfied. It is also shown that Yuki is a hard worker once he has a passion for it.

He has a fan club headed by Minagawa Motoko that tries to "protect" him from other admirers, with the result that Yuki is further isolated. Yuki, however, wishes that he could be with people as friends, rather than be admired from afar, and envies both Kyo's and Kakeru's easy ways with others. He is touched when, Tohru faced with the prospect of having her memory of the Sohma family secret erased, Tohru asks that he will remain her friend, which no one had asked him before.

Like Kyo, Yuki also tries his hardest to make sure that Ayame and Momiji don't sleep with Tohru. And like Kyo, he also can't stand Ritsu whenever he panics. He also gets happy whenever he sees Kazuma again after a long period of time.

Appearance

Yuki Sohma stands 5' 7" and weighs 119 pounds. He has silver hair (dark gray in the anime). Yuki's hair style has front fringe with the left side of his hair longer than his fringe. He dresses mainly in Chinese-style clothes just for the reason that Takaya sensei (the mangaka) likes them. She added that she believes they suit his androgynous nature, and that she deliberately gave Yuki and Kyo different styles to distinguish them farther.

While Kyo prefers loose clothes, Yuki often wears collared or tight fitting clothes. Later on in the manga, it is seen clearly that Yuki slowly changes his style by wearing looser clothing more or less like Kyo. When Yuki transforms, he is a rat with silver fur. According to Tohru, Yuki shares the same eyes as Ayame, only to be different colors and Ayame looks like a grown-up version of Yuki. The only thing he and Ayame have in common is annoying Kyo.

Yuki as a Rat.

Like all members of the Sohma family, who are curse by the Chinese Zodiac. Yuki turns into a bright white small rat when he is hugged by a girl, or when his body goes under a great deal of stress. Whenever he is not in his rat form, Yuki admits that sometimes he would be surrounded by rats. An example being in episode 1, when he call a lot of rats to help him dig out some of Tohru's belonging after a land slide ruin her tent. Another example is in episode 16, when he and Kyo while arguing in there Zodiac forms and a lot of Rats surrounded Yuki while he was on a tree branch. In the 2019 anime series, he turns into a dark gray rat. The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals.

In Chinese culture, Rats are clever, quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life, which applies to Yuki rather well.

The Rat of the Zodiac is considered to be the closest to "God", and therefore seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. According to the Chinese Zodiac, the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived at his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, the Rat jumped down and landed ahead of the Ox, becoming first.

It is later on revealed in the true Chinese Zodiac Legend that the Rat drank God's water willingly and first out of everyone. The water was a spell that would make all the Zodiacs and God's friendship last for all eternity, that they would be reborn again and again and no matter how many times they were reborn the bond of their friendship would remain.

Because of being born as the Rat, Yuki automatically became one of the highest members of the Zodiac. However, his parents took advantage of Yuki's position to earn the wealth for themselves, and they sold Yuki; the Rat, off to Akito; the God. Because of this, Yuki was abused by Akito for most of his childhood, and was not able to take part in any other activities, since he had to be bound with Akito at all times.

When Yuki's curse broke, he was subconsciously aware of it and broke down in tears. Although he was left with a bittersweet feeling, he was finally able to hug Machi and mentioned that doing so was more than enough. Yuki's curse was the last and overall thirteenth to break.

Fruits Basket Manga

When Tohru falls from a cliff and is hospitalized, Yuki looks after her until the ambulance arrives. He also visits her in the hospital on many occasions to keep her company. However, upon realizing that Kyo had not visited Tohru even once, he was enraged. Partly because he had made Tohru cry, and because Yuki acknowledged that Kyo was much more capable than anyone else. Yuki later on confronts Kyo at home and consequently beats him up about not going to see Tohru in hospital, how Yuki idolized Kyo and wanted to be like him, and about how much he really made Tohru happy. After the confrontation, the two boys began seeing eye-to-eye, and after Yuki heard that Kyo idolized him too, Yuki broke down in tears.

As Yuki returns to school, he is shocked to realize that he hasn’t really been struggling that much with Tohru’s absence that much. This is thanks to, as Yuki describes, the support of people around him, specifically Kakeru and Machi. Thanks to their support, Yuki also realizes how self-aware he has become and how much he has grown. Then Machi calls him up out of the blue for a little impromptu gift exchange. Machi gives him fertilizer while Yuki gives her a Mogeta figurine. Towards the end of their meeting, Machi is able to confess to Yuki, and they finally realized that they needed one another to be complete.

As time went on, Yuki began thinking that he wanted to tell Machi about the Sohma Curse and his own history as the Rat. Despite the risks and the fact that he could only hope that she'd would accept him, he also expresses how he wants to be with her forever. At a later date, Yuki calls Machi and asks her to meet him at a certain spot.[5] As Yuki was getting ready to tell Machi the truth, his curse breaks unexpectedly, so he instead embraces and confesses his feelings towards her. Machi asks him if she could call him by his first name, to which Yuki happily consented.[6] They soon become a couple, and they visit Kakeru and his girlfriend Komaki Nakao together.

Towards the end, Yuki gives Machi the key to the apartment he will be staying in while he attends college. When she rejects it, he jokingly attempts to throw it out of the window. This made Machi flustered and she embarrassingly accepts the key. Machi then expresses that she will lonely once Yuki graduates and moves away to attend college, but she also tells him that she'll catch up to him. Yuki is happy by hearing this and replies that he'll wait for her.

Yuki thereafter visits the house he stayed in with Shugure, Kyo, and Tohru for the past two years, for the last time. He asks Kyo where Tohru is because he wants to have a private talk with her. Yuki recalls the memories they have shared together, and thanks Tohru for what she has done for the Sohma family, but most of all, what she had done for him and how she had been like a mother-figure for him.

At some point, Yuki married Machi, having one son named Mutsuki Sohma between them. Mutsuki mentions that Yuki and Machi are very loving parents, and that they have a family tradition of waking up early whenever the snow would pile up, and then make trails of footprints in the snow. Thereafter, they would have breakfast together as a family.

When Mutsuki entered middle school, Yuki told him about the Sohma family and its former Curse, as well as his own history as the Rat. Mutsuki then expresses how he was happy that Yuki had told him, and then tells Yuki about how he was glad that he and Machi were his parents, including that he is glad that he lives with them, and lastly that their home is the place he always wants to come home to, since it was always fun and warm.

Upon hearing this, Yuki breaks down in tears and Machi comforted him. It was this day that Mutsuki realized that people cry when they are happy, too.

Yuki is also seen in a memory flashback as silhouettes with Tohru, Kyo, Machi, Hajime's unknown younger brother as Mutsuki played with Hajime when they were younger. Mutsuki mentions that it must be very special for Yuki and Kyo to see Mutsuki and Hajime, their sons, get along as well as they do, especially considering their initial antagonized relationship as teenagers.

As stated by Mutsuki, he lived with his parents in town until he moved from home to attend the school they attended, Kaibara High. Mutsuki mentions that even though their home is very clean now (as opposed to both Yuki and Machi's messy rooms during their teenage years), they have a "secret" that no one knows about. Mutsuki is also very messy and proudly admits that he takes after his parents in that aspect.

Yuki confronts Kyo about his anti-social behavior during his first day of school. Kyo reveals that while Yuki may want nothing more than to escape the Sohmas, he himself only wants to be accepted as a real member of the family. Tohru stops the two of them fighting by accidentally hugging Kyo, who yells at her in anger. Later on, Kyo meets Tohru in the forest on her way home to apologize for all the trouble he caused. Tohru forgives him, and the two reconcile. The next day, Yuki picks her up from work and she accidentally makes him transform into a Rat. Yuki reverts back to human form, and in an attempt to save them from the rain, takes Tohru to his secret garden where they try their best to cover the vegetables. Yuki confesses that he is only kind so others will like him, and admits that he is not as charming and polite as he appears. Tohru responds by saying that kindness comes and grows in all shapes and sizes.

Tohru is surprised to discover that Kagura is actually older than them, despite her appearance. Kagura is madly in love with Kyo, and she is displayed as having dissociative identity disorder. Kagura is clumsy and ill-mannered, and causes quite the ruckus in the household. At first Kagura is envious of Tohru, due to her living situation with Kyo, but she ends up befriending Tohru before departing at the end of the episode.

Tohru finally goes back to living with her paternal grandfather, as his house renovations are complete. However, this turns out to be harder for Tohru than she thought, and leaves the Sohma family despondent. Joining Tohru in her grandfather's house is her paternal family, who view her more as a burden than a blessing. After a series of situations in which they are shown to be verbally abusive, Tohru's grandfather urges her to go where she would be happier. Yuki and Kyo arrive to retrieve her as she confesses that she is more satisfied living with the Sohma family. They all return to their house to meet up with Shigure. Tohru is happy to continue her new life living with the Sohma family.

Tohru invites her friends, Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima, to the Sohma household residence. Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure worry about what will happen if Arisa and Saki discover the Sohma family secret. The three struggle as they try to get acquainted with the girls while hiding their nervousness. Over the course of the visit, the boys have numerous encounters making contact with the girls, thereby transforming into their animal forms. Arisa and Saki, unaware of their transformations, become very suspicious, and Tohru gets increasingly nervous after each close call. Arisa and Saki soon realize that Tohru belongs in the Sohma household residence, after seeing how the Sohma family admires her, and depart none the wiser.

The high school is planning cultural festival, blueprinting a creative idea regarding rice balls. The class picks Yuki's hit-or-miss method over Kyo's all-or-nothing plan. Tohru realizes that Yuki and Kyo admire each other, comparing them to rice balls with pickled plums on their backs. During the cultural festival, Yuki is asked to wear a dress, much to his humiliation. Soon thereafter, Momiji Sohma and Hatori Sohma, the Rabbit and Dragon of the Chinese zodiac respectively, pay a visit. Tohru learns from Hatori that Yuki has asthma, though it is steadily becoming less severe. Momiji insists on hugging Tohru just to transform into a Rabbit, causing complications for everyone. Yuki warns Tohru to not be alone with Hatori. Hatori privately enjoins her to visit the Sohma main residence, after which Tohru becomes worried that her memories may be erased.

While Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo, along with Arisa and Saki, help spruce up the Sohma household residence for New Year's Day, Shigure is harassed by his editor, Mitsuru, finish his manuscript. After Mitsuru is given the manuscript and after Arisa and Saki help clean the house, Tohru is told that the boys will be spending their New Year's Day at a banquet held in the main residence. However, Yuki and Kyo have their own excuses not to go to. Shigure convinces the two to attend the banquet, but the three are stopped by Saki, who subtly convinces Yuki and Kyo to stay with Tohru, who would otherwise be spending the day alone, while Shigure goes on to the main residence alone. Shigure informs Akito of Yuki and Kyo's absence, and Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo watch the sunrise together, making wishes for the New Year.

Yuki comes down with a fever. Although Tohru tries to convince him to stay home, he accepts a challenge from Kyo to a contest: he must win the endurance run at school the following day. Tohru meets Hatsuharu, the Ox of the Chinese zodiac, during the endurance run. It is shown that Hatsuharu also has dissociative identity disorder, and he intentionally trips Kyo during the challenge against Yuki. He has come to challenge Kyo, and the two engage in hand-to-hand combat. However, as Tohru and Yuki watch the two fight, Yuki feverishly collapses. Hatsuharu clasps Tohru, to which he transforms into a cow, instead of an Ox, and is to carry Yuki back to the household residence. Later on, Hatsuharu explains to Tohru why he used to hate the clever Rat for insulting the foolish Ox. However, he further explains how he later forgave himself for being envious of Yuki.

On Valentine's Day, Tohru decides to buy chocolates for Sohma relatives that she had recently met to thank them for everything they've done for her. Meanwhile, Kyo has to deal with Kagura and refuses to eat her chocolate. After a month, the high school was the midterm exams. Shortly thereafter, Tohru decides to work overtime, but to unknown reasons. Later in the evening, Momiji comes by the household residence to invite Tohru to a trip to a hot springs resort for White Day, to which Yuki and Kyo would eventually tag along. Shigure gets a phone call from Tohru's grandfather saying that the fees for her class trip haven't been paid, and Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure then realized that she used her money earned in order to buy chocolates for everyone. Kyo becomes aggravated, knowing that she could have spent all the money for herself rather than for everyone else. Momiji tells a story of a foolish traveler who seemed too generous and was always tricked. He compares the traveler to Tohru, commenting on how she gives so that everyone can be happy even if she is not.

Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, and Momiji go to the Sohma hot springs resort. The group is startled by the hostess of the host springs resort, and she later apologizes repeatedly for her actions. Tohru eventually learns that she becomes lightheaded when in the hot springs bath, especially when Momiji helps her sing with him. The hostess later reveals to Tohru that her son is a member of the Chinese zodiac. Later on Tohru plays ping-pong with Kyo, but she misses the ball served by him. As Yuki leaves the room, Tohru follows him, discovering that he admits he would have been ashamed to laugh in front of Kyo and Momiji. He then surprises her with a gift for White Day, two gold hair ribbons fit for a real princess. Afterwards, Tohru finds out that Momiji and Hatsuharu will be enrolled for high school the following semester, much to the surprise of Tohru.

Momiji and Hatsuharu begin their first year in high school. Kyo saves Tohro from two high school boys while they were looking for both of them. Kyo sees Momiji wearing a female uniform, much to his chagrin, and sees Hatsuharu wearing a male uniform, much to his relief. The student council president, Takei Makoto, arrives to rant on about Momiji's outfit as well as Hatsuharu's natural black and white hair, however Hatsuharu defends against Takei. Akito comes to the high school and introduces himself to Tohru. Yuki is terrified when he sees Akito with Tohru, assuming he threatened her, or did something else. Akito then confronts him about skipping the banquet held on New Year's Day. He threatens Yuki about his past, to when he was whipped constantly in an isolated room, which physically and mentally traumatizes Yuki. Tohru interrupts to push Akito away, however feeling awful for doing it, in order to excuse Yuki to go back to class with her. Akito takes his leave soon thereafter. Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Momiji, Hatsuharu, Arisa, and Saki all plan an afternoon playing badminton, in an attempt to cheer Yuki up. Meanwhile, Hatori philosophically mentions to Shigure that if Yuki could be hurt by Akito, then he could also be healed by Tohru.

Ayame Sohma, the Snake of the Chinese zodiac decides to pay a visit to the household residence, supposedly to see Yuki, being his older brother. Ayame turns out someone who is disliked by everyone except for Shigure and Hatori, as they were his childhood entourage. Ayame later tells Tohru that he has been separated from Yuki since he was born, making it difficult to bond with him. After hearing his story, Tohru devotes herself in assisting him. However, Ayame proves to be arduous for Yuki to cope with. Ayame begins to tells stories about how he was able to main his long hair as well as his active duty as the student council president when he was in high school. Hatsuharu soon contacts Hatori to take Ayame back to the Sohma main residence. It is revealed that Ayame only listens to Hatori because of his admiration for him.

Yuki, Kyo, Arisa, and Saki all come along with Tohru to visit the tombstone of Kyoko, Tohru's mother. Yuki wonders how Tohru can be content with her life after the deaths of both her mother and father. They soon have a picnic in front of the tombstone to commemorate the memories of Kyoko. Saki begins to worry about Tohru's life among the Sohma family. Later on, during work, Tohru meets with Momiji, who explain his parents' roles within the building she works at. She soon finds out that his mother is amnesic. Momiji explains to her that his mother rejected him for being a member of the Chinese zodiac, and, as a result, requested for her memories of him to be eradicated. Tohru and Momiji then vow to keep their memories to be strong enough in the future to look back to what been remembered in the past.

Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Shigure, and Hatori voyage to the Sohma summer house for a vacation. Yuki and Kyo decide to take a stroll with Tohru into the nearby forest. Tohru becomes worried when Kyo and Yuki are silent for unknown reasons. This causes her to lose balance and fall. Yuki and Kyo try to grab a hold of her, as they end up transforming into a Rat and a cat, respectively, to help break her fall. The two begin to bicker over nothing, and Tohru is relieved to see them act like their normal selves. They explain that they have started being comfortable around her as to not their guard down. Later on, Shigure contacts Ayame to join the rest of the group at the summer house, much to the despair of Yuki and Kyo. Yuki and Kyo then decide to walk toward the nearby lake. Meanwhile, Ayame tells Shigure and Hatori that Kana has been recently married to someone, reminding Hatori of his times with her. Ayame tries again to bond with Yuki once again, only to end up in failure. Tohru accidentally turns Ayame into a Snake, and Yuki throws Ayame into the lake.

During a downpour, Hatsuharu introduces Tohru and Yuki to Kisa Sohma, the Tiger of the Chinese zodiac. Kisa is mute due to being bullied as a child. Yuki begins to have sympathy over her after he learns that Kisa ran away from her home and stopped attending middle school. Kisa's mother later arrives, worried as to why she ran away from her home. Tohru responds by saying that Kisa might feel rejected by her mother if she knew about Kisa being bullied at her school. Kisa is agreed to stay at the household residence until further notice. During that time, Kisa seems to be clinging to Tohru, following her wherever Tohru went. Tohru and Yuki meet with Momiji and Hatsuhara after school, figuring out that Kisa was bullied at her school for her hair and eye color. After Hatsuharu receives a letter from Kisa's middle school, Yuki reads it to her. Yuki and Hatsuharu encourages her to speak and later to attend school again, after they explain that one must be accepted by others before one can be accepted by oneself.

Motoko Minagawa, Minami Kinoshita, Mio Yamagishi, and Mai Gotou, the members of the Prince Yuki fan club, initiate a scheme to seemingly do an interview with Saki to better understand her psychic ability of sending and receive electric waves. It is later revealed that the fan club plans to seek revenge, finding out the weakness of Saki in order to approach Tohru. The fan club is invited to the Hanajima residence, as they led to her bedroom and are introduced to Megumi Hanajima, Saki's younger brother. Megumi tells the fan club about his ability to curse people after learning their names. Saki then figures out that the fan club is only concerned as to why Tohru is spending so much time with Yuki, startling the fan club. Megumi explains that love can be a source of both pleasure and pain and must not be forced upon others. He then seemingly curses them after calling out their names, to which they quickly depart. Saki narrates revealing her weakness being Tohru, as she is always protective of Tohru.

Due to depression and stress because of failing one test on the midterm exams, Tohru comes down with a high fever and is bedridden. Even though Tohru is worried about making dinner or going to work, Kyo and Shigure tells her to get some rest until the fever lets up. Shigure calls Momiji to cover for Tohru at work, while Kyo decides to make leek soup to care for her. Shigure ridicules Kyo after he notices Kyo wearing a gas mask and goggles while cooking the leek soup, as. When Kyo gives the leek soup to Tohru, she later starts to cry, explaining to him that the failed test and the fever were the sources of her depression and stress. After Tohru goes to sleep, Yuki arrives, only to find out that Kyo used the leeks in Yuki's garden to make the leek soup. Momiji, Hatori, and Kisa visit the household residence to check up on Tohru. Yuki comes by to give her a study guide he constructed for her in preparation for the retest of the midterm exam, which she later takes and passes.

After Ayame advertises about his fabric store, Tohru and Yuki decide to pay him a visit. Once there, they are surprised to apprehend that it is a fabric store for males, stocked with outfits typically for females. Mine Kuramae, Ayame's assistant explains to Yuki all the types of uniform she wears, putting him in a state of confusion. Mine later decides to apparel Tohru in a golden dress, so that Ayama can spend time bonding with Yuki. Yuki points out to Ayame that they are two different people, with opposite personalities. Yuki eventually would accept Ayame for who he is.

While on her way to work, Tohru encounters Hiro Sohma, the Goat of the Chinese zodiac. He is shown as a person who practices sophism, constantly hurling verbal insults. Hiro steals Tohru's notebook from her handbag, causing her to panic. Tohru, Kyo, Momiji, and Kisa all find him to confront his attitude. Yuki with Tohru.

When Tohru was a child (in the manga), she got lost trying to run away from a group of boys that were picking on her, unable find her way home. A boy found her but ran away from her. she pursued him and called out to him to wait and said she wanted to go home. He turned back to her and led her home. He gave her the cap he was wearing and ran off before he could show his face. It turns out that this boy was actually in fact a young Yuki.

Years later in the present time, Yuki still remembers that incident, but thinks that Tohru has forgotten about it, until he discovers the red cap in her room when they were studying. He asks her why she keeps it to which she responds "Because it's a precious memory of mine! To be able to receive his help ... it was really ... the happiest moment in my life!" (Chapter 53).

At the beach house in chapter 59 after being confronted by Akito, Yuki wanders off, thinking. Tohru gets concerned when he does not return and goes out to search for him. When she does find him, Yuki comes to realize that her help and kindness have helped him "open the lid" to his feelings. He kisses her forehead and sheds tears as he realizes he loves her.

However, in chapter 83, after being locked in a closet and has a relapse of memories and his troubled childhood, he realizes that he was not seeking her love as a woman, but instead saw her as a motherly figure. This may be due to the fact that he was "given" to Akito as a child and was never really raised by his parents. In later chapters the two grow somewhat distant due to Yuki with the student council, and Tohru trying to understand her feelings and wanting to break the Zodiac curse. However, they remain friendly towards each other during this period.Yuki remains still protective of her, as proved when he beats Kyo up every time he says something rude to Tohru.

At the end of the manga Yuki has a conversation with Tohru the day before she moves out admitting that, to him, she was like a mother who "raised me [Yuki] "as 'a human'" (Chapter 136). He then, for the first time, calls her "Tohru" as opposed to "Honda-san", (which he called her for the duration of the manga and all of the 2001 anime because he felt calling her by her first name was embarrassing). His older brother Ayame (who Yuki was estranged for awhile) is determined throughout the series to get Yuki and Tohru together.

Sohma Akito

Yuki has a twisted relationship of love and hatred towards Akito. Being the Rat of the Zodiac, it placed Yuki at the top of the Zodiac, making him the closest to 'God' or Akito. As such, the two 'love' each other more than the other Zodiacs. However, the twisted mind of Akito that led her to torturing Yuki, made Yuki to hate Akito as a person. But due to the overwhelming feelings from the spirit of Rat that possesses him, Yuki cannot truly hate Akito.

Sohma Kyo

Sohma Ayame

Ayame is Yuki's older brother. Yuki seems to hate him but that was because Ayame pushed Yuki aside when Yuki wanted his comfort. Ayame was never really acknowledging his existence and therefore a rift began between the two brothers. Tohru tried to help them but it didn't work and the rift grew bigger. Though as the story goes on, they seem to grow closer.

Sohma Hatsuharu

In the Zodiac legend, the Rat rides on the Ox's head to win the Zodiac race. This made the Ox to be labelled as 'stupid' by the rest of the Zodiac animals because it wasn't aware of the rat riding on it. The fooled Ox continued discriminated even after it possessed a human. The current possessed Sohma is none other than Hatsuharu. Tired of being teased, scolded, discriminated because he is the Ox, Hatsuharu went on to hunt down Yuki, who was currently possessed by the Rat, and takes out his (and the Ox's) anger on Yuki (or the Rat), blaming Yuki that he was labelled as a 'stupid' person.

However, Yuki calmly replies that does Haru really think he himself is stupid. When Haru realizes that he should not keep on believing the people around him that he's stupid, he starts to look up to Yuki. Ever since that day of confrontation, Haru has always admired Yuki, even professing a 'love' towards Yuki.

When she did so, he said "Say it again", this time, after she did, he kissed her and told her that he loved her. Before Yuki leaves to go to the university, he gave Machi a key to his apartment.

Manabe Kakeru

Kakeru is Yuki's friend when he met him when Yuki began his presidential work at his high school. Yuki thinks of him as annoying fellow student. Both of them have been labelled as a 'odd couple', Kakeru being the 'clown' of the couple while Yuki, the 'serious' one.
